In state legislatures across the country the “right to repair” movement is gaining momentum. Thirty-three states and Puerto Rico considered right to repair legislation during the 2023 legislative session. And while this might be a good idea for some products, policymakers should oppose any attempts to weaken regulated safety requirements for repairing life-saving and life-enhancing medical devices. Patient safety is too great a risk.

AMA Urges Vaccination to Protect Public During Respiratory Virus Season
As respiratory virus season begins, the American Medical Association (AMA) is urging everyone who is eligible to get vaccinated against the three main respiratory viruses expected to again circulate this year—influenza, SARS-CoV-2, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Specifically, the AMA encourages everyone six months and older, including pregnant people, to receive the annual flu and updated COVID-19 vaccines, ideally by the end of October. The AMA also urges older adults to get vaccinated against RSV to prevent severe illness, and encourages families to be aware of the new options available to protect infants during RSV season, including maternal vaccination as well as long-acting monoclonal antibody immunization for infants that reduces the risk of both hospitalizations and health care visits for RSV.

The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) announced today that the Red Line Extension Project, which will build a 5.6-mile extension of the Red Line to 130th Street, will receive another $100 million of federal funding, moving the project closer to the CTA’s goal of breaking ground in 2025.

Chicago Public Schools Enrollment Shows Increase for First time in More than a Decade
District analysis shows increase among several groups of students
During a Chicago Board of Education meeting at Austin College & Career Academy High School, Chicago Public Schools (CPS) shared 20th day enrollment and attendance data, showing a slight (0.4 percent) increase in the student population to 323,291 students, as well as a steady attendance rate of 92 percent during the first four weeks of school. The enrollment figure reflects student growth in the District’s expanded preschool programming, growth at the elementary school level, as well as steady high school enrollment. This represents the first increase in the District’s enrollment in 12 years.

Biden-Harris Administration Moves Forward with Student Debt Relief Negotiated Rulemaking to Deliver Support to as Many Borrowers as Possible as Quickly as Possible
The Biden-Harris Administration marked a critical step forward in its efforts to deliver student debt relief to as many borrowers as possible through negotiated rulemaking under the Higher Education Act, even as extreme House Republicans threaten a government shutdown that would hurt families, communities, and our economy. The U.S. Department of Education (Department) today released an issue paper laying out its initial set of policy considerations to create a path to debt relief for student loan borrowers in need. The paper identifies five questions about distinct categories of affected borrowers for which the Department is seeking feedback. This includes questions about borrowers whose balances are greater than what they originally borrowed, whose loans first entered repayment decades ago, who attended programs that did not provide sufficient financial value, who are eligible for relief under programs like income-driven repayment but have not applied, and borrowers who have experienced financial hardship and need support, but for whom the current student loan system does not adequately address.

What began as Joseph Williams reading to his daughter’s class at her school, became a movement to get fathers involved in their children’s lives. Williams started Mr. Dad’s Father’s Club in 2017. It was an outlet for him. He began helping out at the school doing lunchroom duty and hallway monitoring. He built a respect level with the children at the school. He wanted to tap into his children’s lives through volunteering.

The program aims to put power back into the hands of marginalized communities by equipping them with the knowledge and tools needed to navigate legal challenges effectively. Hundreds of Chicagoans have already enrolled in Just Us Bridge's online legal courses, gaining valuable insights into areas such as eviction, debt collection, wage garnishment, and more. By making this program available to all Chicago residents, Just Us Bridge seeks to bridge the gap in access to legal education and representation for those who cannot afford legal services.

Chicago's first and only pre-professional public arts high school, The Chicago High School for the Arts (ChiArts), located at 2714 W Augusta Blvd., welcomes a new school year with major leadership announcement, admissions applications for prospective students, and “Backstage Pass” immersive open house experiences. ChiArts celebrates the start of a new school year with a diverse and energetic team of leaders heading up the academic, arts, and administrative staff. This summer, the school’s new Principal, Pavielle Driver, joined the team, along with Artistic Director Tina Boyer Brown being promoted to Executive Director and Dance Department Head Greer Reed stepping into the Artistic Director role.
