Improving Health Outcomes through Equity and Access

Better access to healthcare equals better health outcomes. Biogen strives to increase access and address the barriers that patient populations face. Oftentimes, health outcomes depend on factors beyond the control of patients and their doctors. Disparities across age, gender, race, ethnicity and socioeconomic level are some examples. One of the key parts to Biogen’s approach involves researching and understanding these issues as well as their compounding factors, such as, inadequate representation in clinical trials and limitations to accessing care. Overall, the goal is clear: improve health outcomes for Black, African American, Hispanic, Latino and other underserved communities in Biogen’s main disease areas.

The Source Grow Grant prioritizes sectors that were heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic – hospitality, food service, arts and entertainment, retail trade, transportation, warehousing, childcare and social assistance, as well as accommodations. The hope is the grant money and business advising to people in these sectors from these communities will help close the racial wealth and opportunity gap. THE CHICAGO LIGHTS’ TUTORING PROGRAM HELPS STUDENTS

The Chicago Lights’, a one-on-one tutoring program has returned in-person this year for the first time in two years. Chicago Lights’ is the nonprofit organization at Fourth Presbyterian Church, located at 126 E. Chestnut St. The tutoring program began in 1964 as a way to provide support to students who needed help North, West and South sides of the city. Each year, between 300-400 students are serviced. Each student is matched with a mentor.

The Assessor’s Office released a new database that shows a greater level of detail for each property located in Cook County. A property owner can visit the Assessor’s website, enter their PIN, or address, and obtain information such as the estimated market value, assessed value, and property characteristics. New noteworthy features include information pertaining to permits, divisions & consolidations, and the Homeowner Improvement Exemption.
