53 CPS students earn an associate degree through a partnership with CCC
Chicago Public Schools (CPS) CEO Pedro Martinez, City Colleges of Chicago (CCC) Chancellor Juan Salgado, school administrators and families came together to recognize the growing number of CPS graduates who are leaving high school with a diploma as well as transferable college credits, up to and including an associate degree. Approximately 5,000 CPS Class of 2023 graduates earned nearly 40,000 total college credits from CCC while still in high school, saving an estimated $5.8 million in total projected college tuition costs.

May is stroke awareness month, and Advocate Health Care and the Chicago Cubs will honor a special stroke survivor on Tuesday, May 30 when the Cubs take on the Tampa Bay Rays at 7:05 p.m. Ashley Lunardini, a Chicago native, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch, receive a customized jersey, watch batting practice and meet players before the game. The My Brother’s Keeper Alliance, a program of the Obama Foundation, announced four MBK Model Communities, a new initiative that seeks to expand the implementation of evidence-based practices and impact for communities across the country. These MBK Model Communities were selected from a network of hundreds that have an evidence-based track record of success in positively shifting outcomes for boys and young men of color. The four are: Newark, New Jersey; Omaha, Nebraska; Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Yonkers, New York, each representing a tangible example of the systems-level impact that communities can have when working to achieve the MBK Milestones. The MBK Milestones are six key life milestones that research shows are especially predictive of later success, and where interventions can have the greatest impact.

PROGRAM HELP STUDENTS PREPARE FOR COLLEGE
The University of Chicago’s Office of Civic Engagement has several programs that help students who attend Chicago Public School high schools prepare for college. Two of those programs are Upward Bound and the Collegiate Scholars Program. The Collegiate Scholars Program was established in 2003. It is a free, three-year college preparation program. It focuses on helping high school students prepare for admission to top colleges and universities throughout the country.

HB 3162 retroactively provides Chicago police officers and firefighters disability benefits for the time they were unable to serve due to contracting COVID-19 between March 9, 2020, and June 30, 2021.

Elizabeth Elie, who goes by the stage name Lizzie G, spreads a message of positivity, anti-bullying and unity. Lizzie G was always musically inclined. She taught herself how to play the drums and plays the piano. In her teenage years, she started to have a love of music producing. She would put her poetry with the beats she created and turned it into rap. She debuted Lizzie G during her senior year at Marie Curie High School.

Christina Bolton Taylor started Cardiac Jump Starters because of her father. He was a nurse and Bolton Taylor followed in his footsteps. She started Cardiac Jump Starters in March 2021, with her father in mind. He passed away in 2018 after a choking incident led to cardiac arrest. Bolton Taylor believes his life could’ve been spared if her mother had received training in proper resuscitation procedures.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Keenan Taylor, a native of Calumet City, Illinois, serves in Japan aboard a forward-deployed U.S. Navy warship. Taylor joined the Navy 2019 years ago. Today, Taylor serves as an operations specialist aboard USS Dewey. “I wanted to be a part of something bigger than myself,” said Taylor. "It's something I have been interested in since a field trip to the USS Midway."

The U.S. Department of Education (Department) today announced that, as of the beginning of May 2023, it has approved a total of $42 billion in Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) for more than 615,000 borrowers since October 2021. This is a result of the temporary PSLF changes made by the Biden-Harris Administration that made it easier for borrowers to reach forgiveness. At the end of the previous Administration, only about 7,000 borrowers had been approved for the PSLF program.

Whitney Young Magnet High School Takes Second Place in National Decathlon Championship
Whitney M. Young Magnet High School’s decathlon team took second place over the weekend at the rigorous and highly-competitive United States Academic Decathlon National Competition in Frisco, Texas, earning one of the school’s highest scores to date at the national level. Of note, both Lane Tech College Prep High School and the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences also participated at the national level in Texas but in a separate division with Lane Tech taking second place in that division and both schools bringing home individual gold medals as well.

With the Gun Violence Archive reporting that guns have killed more than 14,000 Americans so far in 2023, U.S. Representative Robin Kelly (D-IL), U.S. Senators Cory Booker (D-N.J.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) announced today that the Firearm Safety Act -- common sense legislation to allow the Consumer Product Safety Commission to create safety standards for firearms -- is being introduced in the Senate for the first time. New ACR Breast Cancer Screening Guidelines call for earlier and more-intensive screening for high-risk women
Black women considered high risk need earlier screening
New American College of Radiology® (ACR®) breast cancer screening guidelines now call for all women — particularly Black and Ashkenazi Jewish women — to have risk assessment by age 25 to determine if screening earlier than age 40 is needed. The ACR continues to recommend annual screening starting at age 40 for women of average risk, but earlier and more intensive screening for high-risk patients. The new ACR guidelines for high-risk women were published online May 3 in the Journal of the American College of Radiology (JACR).

The U.S. Department of Education’s (Department’s) office of Federal Student Aid (FSA) announced it has signed contracts with five companies to modernize and enhance loan servicing for more than 37 million borrowers with federally managed loans. Central Research, Inc.; EdFinancial Services; Maximus Education, LLC; Missouri Higher Education Loan Authority (MOHELA); and Nelnet Diversified Solutions received contracts today through the Unified Servicing and Data Solution (USDS) solicitation and will implement much-needed improvements to better serve borrowers. This new loan servicing environment is part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s sweeping efforts to improve the student loan repayment system and help all borrowers successfully manage their debt.

Collectible coins, currency, fine silver and jewelry are among the more than 200 unclaimed property items to be auctioned online through May 5th. “We hold these auctions when we need additional space in our vault,” said Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs, whose office oversees unclaimed property in Illinois. “We choose items that typically have not been touched in about 10 years and that would make an interesting gift.”

Youth Internship Program gives students hands-on experience
The University of Chicago is set to accept students into its Youth Internship Program. Students who are interested in health sciences, computer sciences or IT services are encouraged to apply. The University of Chicago launched the Youth Internship Program in 2021 to provide paid employment opportunities for Chicago Public high school students who live on the South Side of Chicago. The mission of the program is for students to gain a stronger peer network, prepare and expose them to college and career options. Students have access to guest speakers at the University, as well as to professional development activities. The hope is that access will enable them to be more successful in the internship experience.

Stillman College Wins the 34th Honda Campus All-Star Challenge, America's Premier HBCU Academic Competition
Stillman College earned top honors and a $75,000 institutional grant from Honda at the 34th Honda Campus All-Star Challenge (HCASC), America's premier academic competition for students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Hosted on the American Honda corporate campus in Torrance, Calif., more than 200 HBCU students, along with their coaches, participated in this year's HCASC National Championship Tournament, which returned to an in-person format for the first time in four years. Beyond the competition, the HCASC program included student networking opportunities and activities with HBCU presidents and representatives. Honda provided more than $400,000 in institutional grants to the participating HBCUs.
