Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot and Interim Chicago Public Schools CEO Dr. José M. Torres announced the creation of the Chicago Families Forward Fund. Driven
by Chicago families’ high level of continued financial need, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Families Forward Fund will provide emergency assistance to eligible students and families. The Fund, aimed at supporting families with educational and living expenses, will distribute more than $9
million in assistance before the end of the Fall 2021 semester.
Mark Walker has been in the retail business for seven years, starting out with Oooh Wee Sweet Tea. The tea was being sold in the Harold’s Chicken at 87th and Dan Ryan in December of 2014, at a tea stand set up on vintage luggage, with one flavor, lemon honey. It blossomed. In the first year, there were 286,000 cups of tea sold and name recognition from celebrities and elected officials. Walker hired staff and was able to get tea in more places.

Chicago Public Library (CPL) announced today that Bedrock Faith by Chicago author Eric Charles May is the 2021 One Book, One Chicago selection. One Book, One Chicago is a free citywide literary program that connects Chicagoans and their communities around a singular chosen text. From
September through December 2021, CPL will explore the book and many programs through this season’s central theme “Neighborhoods: Our City’s Bedrock.” Initiated in 2001, One Book, One Chicago celebrates its 20th anniversary this year with this Chicago neighborhood story.

Sculptor Ed Dwight is preparing to create a memorial to Clayton that visitors to Georgia can admire and residents here can take pride in. Dwight is designing an 8 ft. Bronze Sculpture of Clayton that will be erected at Xernona Clayton Plaza. This honor will make Clayton the first Black woman to have a statue erected in downtown Atlanta, and she is the first Black woman to have a street named in her honor.
Kiley Russell, founder and executive director of Kemit Academy, first opened the day care, with a focus on children with different needs 16 years ago. She was trying to find a space for her older son that wasn’t all play but not strict and structured all day. As a school administrator, she was working many hours each day but spending a few hours with her son.

Loyola University Chicago is hosting the Angels Unawares sculpture on its Lake Shore Campus. Loyola will be the sculpture’s final stop on a year-long nationwide tour sponsored by The Catholic University of America and is only the second Jesuit university to host the piece.
The CVS Alumni Association answered the call from the high school’s athletic department for support by hosting a 5K run and walk to raise
funds. The Association was able to raise $5,000 which it will donate to the athletic department.
Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs today announced another program management fee reduction for all Bright Start 529 college savers – the third reduction in five years. Effective July 3, 2021, Bright Start dropped its program management fee – the fee charged by Union Bank & Trust, the program manager for Bright Start – from 0.075% to 0.07%, a reduction that will save college savers a combined $500,000 every year. The lower fees will help every Bright Start investor save for college at a lower cost.
