From Thursday to Friday, Oct. 13-15, the Illinois Legislative
Black Caucus Foundation (ILBCF) will host its Annual Conference at the Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk. The conference will be an opportunity for students, legislators, and other civically-
minded individuals to participate in informative workshops, hear from a lineup of subject matter experts, network, and
celebrate the ILBCF’s enduring legacy during its 20th anniversary year.
The books were published in 1998-1999 and there was even a “Roopster Roux Day.” Lavette created a Roux community, with reading
and sports at the center. She dreamed of using Roopster Roux to get kids excited about reading and creating a bridge outside of the classroom for parents to help their kids read. She wanted to create Roux gas stations, where gas stations would also be
reading centers.
From Friday-Saturday, Sept.30-Oct. 1, Chicago City Treasurer Melissa Conyears-Ervin and BMO Financial Group hosted the “Building Wealth Today for Tomorrow Financial Empowerment Weekend” at the UIC Forum. The event combined the Treasurer’s two signature events - the Building Wealth Today for Tomorrow Financial Empowerment Summit and the Financial Services Career Fair. Over 1500 Chicagoland residents took the opportunity to gain insights into the current financial trends, build relationships to obtain job opportunities within the financial services industry, join workshops on saving money, buying
a home or starting a business, and access much more.
The Source Grow Grant prioritizes sectors that were heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic – hospitality, food service, arts and entertainment, retail trade, transportation, warehousing, childcare and social assistance, as well as accommodations. The hope is the grant money and business advising to people in these sectors from these communities will help close the racial wealth and opportunity gap. The funds for the Source Grow Grant were provided by the American Rescue Plan Act.

City Colleges of Chicago now offers a new degree in Applied Cannabis Studies making it the first community college in Illinois to do so. The new pathway promises to support students as they pursue an Associate degree in Cannabis Studies, a degree that often leads to high demand jobs that include cannabis consultants, dispensary operators, cannabis extraction technicians, grow masters, and more, all of which have the potential to be high-paying careers.
The City of Chicago officials and Bank of America Chicago Marathon organizers are reminding the public about the 2022 Bank of America Chicago Marathon on Sunday, October 9, with 40,000 runners from all 50 states and more than 100 countries are expected to travel through 29 neighborhoods for the 26.2-mile race, requiring street closures and parking restrictions throughout the Marathon course. Plans are in place for a safe and successful Chicago Marathon weekend, which includes theAbbott Chicago 5K on Saturday, October 8 and residents, spectators, participants, and motorists are urged to be mindful of the traffic impacts as well as safety measures in place for these events.
The Chicago Urban League (CUL) has been awarded a $100,000 grant through the Chicago Community Impact Grants program, developed by McDonald’s Corporation in partnership with The Chicago Community Trust (the Trust).

Mayor Thaddeus Jones is announcing that he has asked current City contractor, Rita Mayfield, to lead the operations at the Calumet City Library. After successfully completing various administrative initiatives for Calumet City since the inception of the current administration, Mayfield has agreed to now lead the much-needed transformation of the Calumet City Public Library facility and its operations.
