UNCF CHICAGO RAISES MORE THAN $100,000 AT THE 41ST ANNUAL WALK FOR EDUCATION

There is still time to give; donation link remains open through Sept. 30

CHICAGO (Sept. 19, 2024) – More than 1200 supporters attended when UNCF (United Negro College Fund) held its 41st Annual Walk for Education recently along Chicago’s lakefront at South DuSable Lake Shore Drive at 39th Street in Burnham Park. The event raised more than $100,000 and the donation link to the Chicago Walk remains open through Sept. 30.

The beautiful lakefront, cool temperature, mellow winds and blue sky were perfect for the annual event. As in previous years, participants could choose a 5K walk/fun run or a 10K bike/skate course.

“We are grateful for the level of participation at the Walk this year,” said Lisa M. Rollins, UNCF Regional Development Director. “However, demand for scholarships has never been greater. We still need support and there is still time to donate to the Chicago Walk,” she said.

Throughout the years, the family-friendly event has gone through several iterations, but remains true to its goal – raising money for scholarships for Black, brown and other deserving students to get to and through college and supporting Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

Toni Preckwinkle, President, Cook County Board of Commissioners, returned this year as Honorary Chair of the Walk for Education bringing along with her the County Board Walk team.

Radio personality Ramonski Luv from FM Omni-Channel Radio and local media personality Frankie Robinson served as emcees, motivating everyone and keeping the energy level high. Advocate, scholar and future veterinarian Amara Harris served as the first ever Walk Grand Marshal, leading the Walk.

In opening remarks, Preckwinkle spoke of the impact of HBCUs on getting kids into colleges and ensuring they graduate.

“The point is not just to go to college, but to graduate, and our HBCUs do a great job of getting the kids across the finish line and helping them graduate," Preckwinkle said.

Today, UNCF supports more than 60,000 students at over 1,100 colleges and universities across the country including 37 UNCF HBCU member schools.

At the Walk, the Black Onyx dance team cheered on participants at the start and finish lines. Afterwards, there were free tacos from Tacos Delicioso and free hot dogs provided by Buddy’s Cart & Catering.

UNCF Chicago 2024 Walk for Education sponsors included Aldi, BMO Harris Bank and Old National Bank. Media partners included WGN-TV, FM Omni Channel Radio, and the Chicago Defender.
