Voting Rights Activists Arrested at White House

Tuesday, October 5, 2021, five voting rights activists were arrested in front of the White House in a demonstration calling on President Biden to take immediate and meaningful action for the freedom to vote. The action was led by the League of Women Voters of the United States, People For the American Way, and the Declaration for American Democracy. A diverse group of activists, including actress Kathleen Turner, members of the clergy, and civil and voting rights advocacy leaders participated in the march to and demonstration in front of the White House.

Ten breast cancer survivors, their family members and doctors from across Illinois will be honored Sunday at the Real Bears Fans Wear Pink game at Soldier Field, as Advocate Health Care, the Chicago Bears and Bears Care (the team’s charitable arm) raise awareness of the disease. The patients will participate in several pregame and in-game experiences and an Advocate physician will take part in the coin presentation before kickoff between the Bears and the Detroit Lions.

Kennedy-King College, located at 6301 S. Halsted, has been named the No. 1 Community College by Forbes Magazine. The community college also ranked No. 8 in the nation, according to Academic Influence, which conducted the rankings. Dr. Theresa Dixon founded the Gloria J. Taylor Foundation in 1997 in honor of her mother who was the first Black and the first woman to hold an elected office in Harvey. Taylor was first elected in Harvey as the Park Commissioner. She saw there weren’t activities or places for the youth to go. She became involved in the community and had a park built. Taylor also developed academic programs for the youth in Harvey. Taylor had a heart for the community and believed in giving back and supporting.

Upfield’s Violife® vegan cheese brand today announced the recipients of its 2021 Plant Grants, a new program aimed at making plant-based meals more delicious, affordable, and available in local communities. This year’s program aims to address the disproportionate challenges faced by Black-owned restaurants and communities, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Five Black-owned restaurants have been selected to receive $20,000 each, as well as education and mentorship, to add new plant-based dishes to their menu and perform outreach in their communities. Blood Donation Events Highlight Need For Blood In Our Communities

The Sickle Cell Awareness Month is recognized in September and the Community Blood Center commemorated the month by hosting blood drives to encourage people of color to donate blood. The Community Blood Center has locations in Chicago, Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It was founded in 1955 to supply blood to hospitals in the Midwest region. It relies on volunteer blood donors. It was extended to Chicago in 2018 to help and engage the community with blood donation.

Illinois Medical District Urges Sickle Cell Awareness

The Illinois Medical District (IMD) and American Red Cross of Illinois are partnering to draw attention to sickle cell disease and its treatment. During National Sickle Cell Awareness Month, the organizations are calling on Chicagoans—especially minority communities affected by sickle cell disease—to donate blood to treat conditions such as sickle cell anemia and reduce disparities in health care for minorities.
