Ghana National Council to Host First-Ever Flag Raising at Daley Plaza for Ghana’s 69th Independence Day
Chicago, IL — The Ghana National Council will mark a historic milestone this year with its first-ever Ghana Flag Raising Ceremony in downtown Chicago, celebrating Ghana’s 69th Independence Day.
The ceremony will take place on March 6 at 12:00 p.m. at Daley Plaza, 50 W. Washington Street, bringing together community members, families, civic leaders, and supporters to commemorate Ghana’s independence and honor the nation’s rich heritage.
Ghana gained independence on March 6, 1957, becoming the first sub-Saharan African country to break free from colonial rule — a moment that inspired liberation movements across the continent. The upcoming ceremony in Chicago aims to reflect that legacy of freedom, resilience, and national pride while highlighting the strength and unity of the Ghanaian diaspora in the Midwest.
“This moment is a proud reflection of our heritage, unity, and cultural strength right here in Chicago,” said Effah Ameyaw, President of the Ghana National Council. “We look forward to celebrating Ghana’s independence with the entire Chicagoland community and sharing this historic occasion together.”
Organizers say the flag raising represents more than a ceremonial event. It symbolizes increased visibility, cultural pride, and solidarity within Chicago’s diverse communities. City leaders and elected officials have been invited to participate in the observance, underscoring the significance of the occasion.
The event is open to the public, and community members across Chicagoland are encouraged to attend and take part in this milestone celebration.
Founded to promote unity, civic engagement, and cultural preservation, the Ghana National Council serves as a hub for the Ghanaian community in Chicago and throughout the United States. Through cultural programming, educational initiatives, and community partnerships, the organization works to preserve Ghanaian traditions while fostering collaboration and inclusion within the broader community.
The March 6 ceremony at Daley Plaza marks a new chapter for the organization and the Ghanaian diaspora in Chicago — one that celebrates heritage while strengthening community ties for generations to come.
