Celebrating America’s 250th Year Safely this Fourth of July
Summer brings many great things: hot weather, warm beaches, family vacations, and now in its 250th year, a major milestone in America’s independence. This upcoming Fourth of July, the Illinois Liquor Control Commission (ILCC) urges everyone to celebrate responsibly by practicing safe alcohol consumption and firework safety.
While professionally conducted fireworks displays are expected throughout the state and across the country, some firework enthusiasts may try to celebrate with consumer fireworks. However, most fireworks are illegal in the state of Illinois, including, but not limited to, bottle rockets, skyrockets, Roman candles, buzz bombs, and firecrackers of all types.
As we celebrate America's 250th year, we want everyone to be aware that irresponsible alcohol consumption can turn a festive day into a dangerous night. It’s a fact that alcohol use impairs judgment and slows down reaction times. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reports that 38% of the fireworks – related injuries are burns and the most common injured body parts are the head, face, ears, hands and fingers.
“The safest way to enjoy fireworks is in the care of licensed professionals,” said ILCC Executive Director, Lisa Gardner. “We want Illinoisians to celebrate with safety in mind this holiday weekend. Have fun, plan ahead, and do everything in moderation.”
If you do plan to use consumer fireworks, please keep the following CPSC Safety Tips in mind:
- Never use fireworks while impaired by alcohol or drugs.
- Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks, including sparklers. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, hot enough to melt some metals.
- Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy, in case of fire or other mishap.
- Make sure fireworks are legal in your area and only purchase and set off fireworks that are labeled for consumer (not professional) use.
- Light fireworks one at a time, then move back quickly.
- Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully.
- Follow all instructions and warnings on fireworks and never hold them in hand unless instructions specify to do so.
