MAYOR JADA D. CURRY OFFICIALLY DECLARES
THE VILLAGE OF LYNWOOD A DISASTER AREA
(Lynwood, IL) Jada D. Curry- Mayor of Lynwood, Illinois- has officially declared the Village of Lynwood a disaster area. This comes immediately following today’s horrific tornado type-storm that has caused significant damage throughout the village. Numerous media outlets have reported possible tornado type activity within the Village of Lynwood as well as surrounding communities.
“Today the Village of Lynwood endured one of the most damaging storms of our existence. Our residents are currently attempting to navigate around fallen power lines, trees, loss of power and other devastating challenges in the aftermath of this enormous storm. My team of administrators and staff will continue to monitor each individual neighborhood by providing safety checks, removal of trees and other debris. Our Public Works Division, Police and Fire Departments are working tirelessly to assist any resident who may need assistance” says Mayor Curry.
The impact of the storm has caused widespread destruction including downed trees, damaged homes, and hazardous debris on roads. In some cases, the damaged structures posed safety risks.
Mayor Curry adds, “ We also are in constant communication with Com-Ed to determine time frames in which our residents can anticipate the restoration of power. Currently 92% of our homes and businesses are without electrical power. In addition, we are in constant dialogue with Nicor should there be a need to shut off any gas lines that might cause harm to our residents.”
The mayor, along with the full Village Board of Trustees, have consistently canvass neighborhoods distributing emergency kits, assisting with trees and extending the lines of communication between residents and the local government.
The mayor issued the local disaster emergency declaration, authorizing the city to:
· Mobilize emergency personnel and resources
· Clear roads and neighborhoods of dangerous debris
· Remove storm-damaged structures that threaten public safety
· Provide immediate relief and support to affected residents.
·
The declaration will remain in effect until officials determine the public is no longer at risk and the situation is stabilized.
