Melanie Campbell, National Coalition on Black Civic Participation President & CEO, Praises Virginia Voters for Passing a Plan That Will Redraw the State’s Congressional Map
Virginians have spoken clearly and decisively, voting ‘yes’ on the redistricting amendments And taking a critical step toward ensuring fair maps, fair elections, and fair representation
Washington, D.C. (April 22, 2026) – Yesterday, the voters in the state of Virginia approved a plan that will allow for the redrawing of that state’s congressional map for the remainder of this decade. This is part of a larger battle over the issue of redistricting that is taking place in several states ahead of the 2026 Midterm Election. The approval of the Virginia referendum drew praise from the leadership of the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation (NCBCP) and the Black Women’s Roundtable (BWR), the leadership development, mentoring, intergenerational empowerment, and power-building arm of the NCBCP.
States Melanie L. Campbell, President of the NCBCP and National Convener of the BWR, “Today, as a proud resident of Virginia and as President and CEO of the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation, I am extremely encouraged by the outcome of this election. Virginians have spoken clearly and decisively, voting ‘yes’ on the redistricting amendments and taking a critical step toward ensuring fair maps, fair elections, and fair representation.
“This victory is about protecting the integrity of elections, strengthening voter confidence, and ensuring that every community, especially Black and underrepresented communities have a fair and equal voice in determining our future. By supporting these amendments, voters have helped level the playing field and move us closer to a system where elections truly reflect the will of the people, not a regime.
“While we celebrate this important progress, we must build a democracy that works for us all; this is not a one-time act. I encourage every voter to stay engaged, informed, plugged in, and active in every election.
“We are united to win and more determined than ever to protect the promise of fair elections for generations to come.”
Adds Krysta Jones, Co-convener of the Virginia Black Women’s Roundtable, “The April 21 Special Election results represent Virginia voters demanding fairness in elections. Despite flagrant misinformation and lies, Black women did more than vote - we led the Virginians for Fair Elections campaign, fought against the misinformation and organized grassroots voter campaigns. Our 2026 work has just begun and the momentum is unmatched. Black Women’s Roundtable Virginia is poised and ready to continue to engage voters during the 2026 midterms and beyond and continue to fight for fair elections.”
