Organization Provides Support For Addiction And Recovery

Dora Wright and her husband started the Chicago Recovering Communities Coalition in 2012 out of the need for addiction support services on the West side of Chicago. Their goal was to put a face to recovery with a vision to help people with active addictions. Wright herself has been in recovery for 38 years. Growing up on the West side, she said she left her community in search of addiction support and recovery programs because she wasn’t aware of any that existed in the community.

It is no secret that differently abled students face several challenges to accessing education, from finding learning methods suited to their needs to ensuring safety in the classroom. But what is often overlooked are the hurdles special needs students experience simply getting to and from school. Unlike a typical bus route, special needs students require personalized transportation provided by highly trained drivers and aides who pick them up and drop them off at their front door. But the combination of the nationwide school bus driver shortage – which is being felt acutely here in Chicago and Northern Illinois – and the continued increase in students with special needs has made providing this specialized form of transportation even more challenging.

Special Report: Lesser-Known Lobular Breast Cancer on the Rise in U.S. Women American Cancer

The American Cancer Society released Lobular Breast Cancer Statistics, 2025, a report on occurrence and outcomes in the United States for this subtype of breast cancer. Findings show an estimated 33,600 women will be diagnosed with lobular breast cancer or invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) this year. Ranked separately, the disease would be the seventh most common cancer among women in the U.S. The report also finds that incidence rates for ILC have increased more steeply (2.8% per year) than all other breast cancers combined (0.8% per year) from 2012 to 2021. The report is to be published in the journal Cancer, an international, interdisciplinary journal of the American Cancer Society.

Illinois announces participation in federal Cell & Gene Therapy Access Model for Sickle Cell Disease treatment

Illinois has been selected to participate in a federal model that will increase access to potentially transformative treatments for people living with rare and severe diseases, advancing the work already underway in the state’s Medicaid program. The Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS) was accepted into the federal Cell and Gene Therapy (CGT) Access Model, a multi-year agreement among states and drug manufacturers to increase Medicaid beneficiaries’ access to treatments. Illinois is expected to be awarded up to $9.55 million in federal dollars over the course of 10.5 years to support Illinois’ implementation of the model, including screenings, referrals and wraparound support services, with the ultimate goal of directly resolving documented barriers to care. 84% of the total model administrative operating costs are federally funded, and the remaining 16% of costs will be funded by the state – up to approximately $1.8 million.

Cook County Confirms Another Measles Case

Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH) has confirmed the third suburban Cook County measles case this year. The case was identified in a suburban Cook County adult whose vaccination status is unknown. Public health officials believe the case was acquired from exposure to the last reported measles case announced on 9/16/2025. CCDPH is working to identify and notify people who may have been exposed to this new case.

Cook County Commissioner Donna Miller Convenes Third Hearing to Examine Maternal Morbidity and Mortality Rates in Cook County

Cook County Commissioner Donna Miller convened a hearing of the Cook County Board’s Health and Hospitals Committee to hear from stakeholders about ways Illinois can better protect women during and after pregnancy and childbirth. In June 2023, Commissioner Miller held the first hearing on the topic after reports showed that in 2020, Illinois had a maternal mortality rate of 23 deaths per 100,000 live births, and for Black women, that rate was six times higher — surpassing the national average. Although the Illinois Department of Public Health noted an improvement in 2024, with Black women being three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related conditions than white women, the disparity remains alarming.

2023 Data Shows Life Expectancy Nearing Pre-Pandemic Levels, CDPH Reports

New data from the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) highlights a third consecutive year of growth in life expectancy for Chicagoans, reaching 78.7 years in 2023. This marks an increase of 1.5 years since 2022, when life expectancy was 77.2 years. The latest data brings the city close to its pre-pandemic peak of 78.8 years in 2019, which was the highest life expectancy ever recorded in Chicago.

He was looking for employment and a career that would enable him to earn enough to take care of himself and start a family. He wanted a program that would train him and provide a path to hiring. Giannoulias Launches Self-Service Emissions Testing Kiosk at Chicago South DMV

Chicagoans now have a new city-based option for getting their vehicle’s emissions test completed. Following the success of the vehicle emissions Mobile Testing Unit pilot at the Chicago South DMV, Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias moved forward with installation of a permanent emissions testing self-service kiosk at the facility. This is in partnership with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA).
