COMMISSIONER McCASKILL INTRODUCES RESOLUTION ENSURING THAT THE MONTH OF MARCH BE RESERVED AS
NATIONAL DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES MONTH IN COOK COUNTY
Dr. Kisha McCaskill- Cook County Commissioner of the 5th District of Cook County- was recently joined by her fellow Commissioners, Disability Service leaders, Cook County Physicians and advocates as she successfully Introduced a resolution calling for the month of March as Developmental Disability Month here in Cook County.
Commissioner McCaskill introduced the measure before the full Cook County Board of Commissioners during the March 13th, 2025, regular meeting of the board. The full Cook County Board unanimously passed the resolution.
“Cook County prides itself on being a place that prioritizes inclusivity and diversity. Celebrating Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month speaks to our Cook County values of inclusiveness and appreciation of people from all backgrounds. We will always support the civil rights and self-determination of our residents with disabilities, we must continue to explore innovative strategies to ensure that all residents with disabilities are given a fair shot at prosperity.” says Commissioner McCaskill.
Commissioner McCaskill adds, “It is necessary for people with developmental disabilities to reach their potential. More than 6 million Americans have developmental disabilities. Under President Toni Preckwinkle’s leadership, and along with the support of my colleagues, Cook County will continue to broaden opportunities for people with developmental disabilities. Cook County will work even harder to ensure that communities are united so that all individuals are recognized for their abilities.”
The resolution detailed key points including that over six million Americans live with developmental disabilities, each facing unique challenges that demand compassion and understanding. In addition, the measure clarifies that the CDC estimates that one in six children aged 3 to 17 are affected, highlighting the urgent need for awareness and support.
Bishop Larry D. Trotter of the Sweet Holy Spirit Church of Chicago concludes, “The fundamental belief that everyone deserves to write their own life story is Commissioner McCaskill’s driving theme in this resolution . That means real access to education, meaningful employment, and quality healthcare. Right now, too many barriers stand in the way of these basic rights for individuals challenged with developmental disabilities. This month, Commissioner McCaskill, President Preckwinkle and the full Cook County Board are turning up the volume on voices calling for change.”
The National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month is a vital opportunity to educate communities and advocate for the full participation of individuals with developmental disabilities in all aspects of life—education, employment, and civic engagement.
