Malcolm X College (MXC) and City Colleges of Chicago (CCC) are proud to announce the official naming ceremony of a brand-new community center at Malcolm X College West Campus (MXCW), its satellite campus, after The Honorable U.S. Congressman Danny K. Davis for his decades of support for City Colleges of Chicago, Malcolm X College and residents of Chicago's West Side on Friday, August 28, 2026.


Malcolm X College West Campus’ Community Center will be named in honor of Congressman Danny K. Davis for his tireless work in ensuring that Malcolm X College and Malcolm X College West Campus students and communities receive the best education, facilities, funding and enriching educational experiences that they need and deserve.


“Malcolm X College is a premier community institution of higher learning, accessible and affordable to the community at large. To be associated with this institution in any way is indeed a high honor, and to have my name placed on this training center is a supreme honor. I have spent my career believing that education is one of the greatest pathways to opportunity, and I am especially proud of the investments we have made in students and families on the West Side and all over Chicago,” said U.S. Congressman Danny K. Davis. “My sincere thanks to Board Chair Katya Nuques and the City Colleges of Chicago Board of Trustees; Chancellor Juan Salgado; David A. Sanders, President of Malcolm X College; Barbara Meschino, Dean of Malcolm X College West Campus; and all those who make this institution a great place to learn, grow, and prepare for a successful future.”

“These critical investments in student opportunities and campus facilities were made possible through the dedicated efforts of Congressman Danny K. Davis, and we are deeply honored to name this beautiful new center after him. He is a true trailblazer and champion of education whose tireless work has opened doors for generations of students across Chicago's West Side and all over our city," said President David A. Sanders, Malcolm X College.


The funds raised by U.S. Representative Danny Davis includes millions of dollars for construction, renovations, childcare, tech labs, and study abroad programs for Malcolm X College students both at the main campus and at MXCW.


Since 1997, Congressman Danny Davis has represented Illinois’s 7th congressional district, which includes much of western Chicago and downtown areas. A tireless leader and civil rights activist, he is recognized for his extensive service in local and federal government, his work on health and social support policy, and deep community roots in Chicago.


The naming ceremony will bring together the Malcolm X College and City Colleges of Chicago communities, elected officials, and Chicago leaders. The event celebrates a leader who has spent his career fighting for better opportunities for Chicago residents. It will take place on Friday, August 28, 2026 at the MXCW Campus.


A Community Center built for students and the West Side

The $17.5 million investment expands the Malcolm X College West Campus, which was formerly known as the West Side Learning Center. The project adds 3,000 square feet to the campus for training and learning. It is designed to benefit both the school and the surrounding Austin and Garfield Park neighborhoods. It also has the potential to increase student capacity of the satellite campus by 50% to serving about 2,000 students each year.


The brand-new space includes many modern features:

  • New recreational and meeting spaces which give students a great place to connect and collaborate.
  • The community center will be fully open to the public to rent for meetings, business functions, and special events.
