Nicor Gas highlights the importance of safety and preparedness during National Preparedness Month
NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Nicor Gas is joining the nationwide observance of National Preparedness Month this September. With a commitment to the safety and well-being of our customers and communities, Nicor Gas is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of being prepared for emergencies.
National Preparedness Month, established by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), is observed every September to encourage Americans to take steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, businesses, schools and communities.
"At Nicor Gas, safety is our highest value," said Wendell Dallas, president and CEO of Nicor Gas. "We are dedicated to providing reliable natural gas, while also ensuring our customers and communities are equipped with the knowledge and resources they need to stay safe during emergencies. National Preparedness Month is a critical reminder for all of us to take proactive steps in preparing for the unexpected."
Below are general preparedness tips to help you and your community stay safe and ready for emergencies:
1. Create an emergency plan:
Develop a family emergency plan that includes meeting locations, communication methods and an out-of-town contact.
Practice your plan regularly with all family members.
2. Build an emergency kit:
Assemble a kit with essentials such as water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, batteries, a first aid kit, medications and important documents.
Include items specific to your family’s needs, such as baby supplies, pet food and personal hygiene items.
3. Stay informed:
Sign up for local emergency alerts and warnings.
Monitor weather reports and heed any evacuation orders or safety instructions from local authorities.
4. Secure important documents:
Keep copies of important documents such as identification, insurance policies and medical records in a waterproof container.
5. Know your community's emergency plans:
Familiarize yourself with the emergency plans of your local schools, workplaces and community organizations.
