A Statement from the Family of DJ Sam Chatman - The Godfather of Steppin’
It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of the legendary DJ Sam Chatman. Known as the Godfather of Steppin’, Sam helped shape, preserve, and elevate a uniquely Chicago-born dance culture into an international phenomenon.
As an iconic DJ, Sam’s influence extended far beyond the turntables. His mastery of music selection, rhythm, and storytelling created the soundtrack for generations of steppers, social dancers, and music lovers. Through countless events, showcases, and community gatherings, he helped transform Steppin’ from a local pastime into a respected art form embraced across the United States and around the world.
Beyond his technical skill, DJ Sam Chatman’s greatest contribution was cultural stewardship. He was a bridge between generations, a teacher without a classroom, and a consistent force for unity, elegance, and pride within the Black community. His work has preserved tradition while inspiring innovation, ensuring the spirit of Steppin’ continues to thrive globally.
Sam was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, and very proud West Sider. His presence and wisdom deeply shaped our family and our community. He was 85 years old.
We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers, and support we have received, which bring us great comfort during this tremendously difficult time. We will share service details in the coming days. We ask for your continued prayers and patience as we grieve and prepare to celebrate his remarkable life.
