Press Conference Announcement: Support for Fire-Affected Families in Chicago Heights

CHICAGO HEIGHTS, IL – Bethel Baptist Church and Bethel Family Resource Center invite the community to a press conference on Tuesday, October 29th at 9:30 AM at 1551 Lowe Ave, Chicago Heights, IL. This event aims to address the recent fire that has displaced nine individuals, impacting two families and resulting in the destruction of six homes, with no injuries or loss of life reported.

In the aftermath of this devastating incident, Bethel Family Resource Center will provide clothing and food vouchers to affected families, including Alicia Campbell and Doris Williams, both of whom had homeowners insurance.

Pastor Lawrence Blackful will speak as a resident, community leader, and pastor, emphasizing the need for immediate assistance for families and addressing the challenges posed by failing infrastructure in underserved communities. He will highlight the Southland Equity Initiative's (SEI) mission and its pilot program designed to rebuild homes more efficiently than traditional construction methods.

There have been concerns regarding the response to the fire, including reports that fire hydrants were not functioning and significant delays occurred when the fire department arrived. Resident Melvin Galloway reached out to multiple fire departments, including Park Forest, Glenwood, Homewood, and South Chicago Heights, underscoring the critical need for investment in community infrastructure and stronger relationships between residents and emergency services.

Additionally, the establishment of a resiliency hub in Chicago Heights is essential. Cook County has funds available to create this hub, and Bethel Family Resource Center is eager to lead this initiative.
