CONGRESSMAN DANNY K. DAVIS VOWS TO FIGHT TO KEEP SUPPORT SYSTEMS INTACT WHILE REPUBLICANS SLASH BENEFITS IN DEBT CEILING PROPOSAL
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Danny K. Davis voted against the Default On America Act. This extreme MAGA Republican legislation presents Americans with a terrible choice: either House Republicans will wreck our economy or inflict cruel cuts that hurt everyday people.
“Brinksmanship is no way to run a government. The Default on America Act is one of the worst bills I have had the opportunity to vote on. It is anti-children, anti-seniors, anti-veterans, anti-middle-America, anti-small-business, anti-healthcare, and anti-workers. As a matter of fact, it is anti-American because all that it does is cut, cut, cut. And when all that you do is cut, cut, and cut, all that you get is blood, blood, blood. And the blood of the American people will be on the hands of those who held the knife. I urge a no vote and yield back.By refusing to act now to prevent a default, House Republicans are threatening an economic disaster that will devastate everyday Americans. In the 7th Congressional district extreme MAGA Republican default on our debt would:
- The 101,000 families who get SNAP benefits and the roughly 251,000 people on Medicaid would face a mountain of paperwork just to keep their benefits.
- The 23,000 families below the poverty level will shoulder much of the burden of the broad budget cuts targeting safety net programs. This hurts families and the communities they live in.
- Across-the-board cuts jeopardize funding for Veterans Affairs health benefits that support the 19,000 veterans in IL-07. This can cause delayed care and missed appointments that worsen health outcomes for our nation’s veterans.
- Republicans’ budget cuts hurt the 95,000 K-12 students when federal funds for education are cut.
- There are 83,000 households that spend more than 30% of their income on rent. Many of these renters include low-income families who are eligible for rental assistance.
- Stifle billions of dollars in investments in green technologies that support good-paying jobs,
- Roll back home energy tax credits that lower costs and protect our planet, and
- Stop the IRS from pursuing wealthy tax cheats who don’t pay their fair share.
