AND DEVELOP RELATIONSHIPS FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE


POWERFUL MOBILE PROGRAM IN COMBATING ALL FORMS OF RACISM AND BIASES

 TO ARRIVE IN CALUMET CITY FOR BLACK HISTORY MONTH



Calumet City Mayor and Illinois State Representative Thaddeus Jones- of the 29th Legislative District- welcomes residents throughout the southland to the Calumet City Public Library to join him in an amazing Black History Celebration featuring the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s Mobile Museum of Tolerance (MMOT).

The MMOT is an extremely valuable and important mechanism that teaches the history of both the Holocaust and the Civil Rights movement. While its most powerful tool is teaching and promoting tolerance amongst all races, the MMOT also inspires people to combat racism, anti-Semitism, bullying, hate intolerance; the MMOT promotes human dignity.

“I was honored to partner with the Simon Wiesenthal’s Center in securing state funding for the creation of the Mobile Museum of Tolerance and am excited that we are bringing it here to Calumet City.” says Calumet City Mayor and Illinois State Representative Thaddeus Jones.

The Calumet City Library has also embraced the MMOT as a significant part of its month-long events celebrating Black History Month.

“We are grateful to the Mayor and the Simon Wiesenthal Center for choosing the Calumet City Public Library to showcase this wonderful display of history of how both the Jewish people and African Americans have contributed to the upward mobility of the United States. It is imperative that we remain steadfast in our quest to ensure that America never forgets the ills of the holocaust and slavery. But the MMOT also provides the tools necessary to overcome, inspire and advance beyond our combined horrific pasts.” Says Scott Nnamah, President of the Calumet City Public Library Board.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center’s Executive Director, Rabbi Meyer May, traveled to Calumet City from Los Angeles to commemorate the occasion. “The Simon Wiesenthal Center is pleased to have the support of strong legislative leaders like Representative Jones who helps advance the Simon Wiesenthal's Center's mission of tolerance, inclusion and activism.

The first-of-its-kind in the United States, the MMOT uses immersive technology and probing questions to create a safe space for students and adults to begin a dialogue about prejudice in historical and contemporary contexts. The workshops aim to move students and participants from dialogue to action and help them to recognize their own personal responsibility in making a positive difference in the world.

Initial funding for the MMOT was provided by the State of Illinois, through a member initiative budget appropriation by Representative Jones to the Illinois State Board of Education and by private donors.

The Mayor will be joined by members of the Calumet City City Council, Board members of the Calumet City Public Library, Calumet City residents and executives from the Simon Wiesenthal Center.

The MMOT will be at the Calumet City Library February 7th and 8th from 10am-4pm, February 9th from 12pm-4pm and Calumet City Hall, February 10th and 11th from 10am-4pm. For more information about the MMOT, please call 312-981-0105 or visit the website at www.mmot.com.
