A Local Entrepreneur moves with faith creating a successful e-commerce Business
Nikkita Randle is the creator of Twisted Egg Roll, a business she started from her love of food and travel. Her passion for cooking led her to create egg rolls with bold flavors. PHOTOS PROVIDED BY CHRISTI LOVE
Randle loves travel and food. She wants to build generational wealth. She’s always had a passion for cooking and can remember when her mother had her making pancakes from scratch. She made cheesesteak egg rolls for her boyfriend one day, then cheesecake egg rolls the next. Then, she made apple pie egg rolls for her line sisters. All of them were a hit. Randle started to come up with recipes while at work.
All of the Twisted Egg Rolls are made from scratch. The first flavor was cheesesteak. Randle thought about egg roll options that had robust flavors. Her goal was to make a recipe that most people would like. One of her friends suggested a mac and cheese egg roll. It was a success and one of her top sellers.
Randle won the Red Eye Big Idea Awards In 2015. It catapulted her into a different sphere. The egg rolls caught the attention of 1871, a Chicago-based technology and entrepreneurship center. They added her to their vendor list. They started a Chi Biz for Women and Minority-Owned Businesses, to help impact small businesses. That partnership introduced Randle to 1871’s clientele. It led to a partnerships with Fooda, local ballparks and the Chicago Riverwalk.
Randle walked away from corporate America in 2016 and started working on Twisted Egg Roll full time. The key to Randle’s success is walking in her purpose. She is huge on her faith and her beliefs.
Randle went to school and worked in corporate America. She gained great knowledge and experience during that time. “All of us have gifts, and He’s placed them in us. When you tap into that, you have to run with it, because He will continue to open doors,” she said.
Randle wasn’t seeking the opportunities she has received. When she did the Red Eye contest, she had no idea 1871 would be there and they would want to partner with her. Fooda reached out to her, not the other way around. Randle believes in surrounding yourself with the right people.
Randle’s boyfriend poured into her. Her friends have prayed for her and covered her. They have rolled egg rolls and worked events. She doesn’t believe anyone gets to where they are alone, no matter how big or small a role those people played. She recommends having a solid team, a good insurance rep and a great CPA.
Randle has come in at a time where there is funding available for Black and women owned businesses. She has been able to get funding to put into a consumer packaging line. She also has leaned into her network.
Even with Randle’s success, she knows it is a journey and there are still things she is figuring out. One thing she would do differently is borrow money when she didn’t need it. She believes it would have given her a better cushion when she walked away from her corporate job and she would have made her numbers even quicker. She recommends people get with a CPA, get their books in order before they walk away from their job so they can have their business credit already running.
Twisted Egg Roll is available in nine of the twelve Foxtrot stores, Green Grocer and at twistedeggroll.com.
