FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN FEMALE TO HEAD THE ILLINOIS MUNICIPAL LEAGUE TO LEAD A SMALL DELEGATION OF ILLINOIS MAYORS TO MEET THE POPE
MAYOR CHALMERS-CURRIN TO LEAD AN EXCLUSIVE MEETING WITH THE CHICAGO BORN HIS HOLINESS POPE LEO XIV
Chalmers-Currin just recently concluded a similar delegation to a very tense trip to Cuba
Sheila Chalmers-Currin- President of the Illinois Municipal League and Mayor of Matteson, Il- will lead a delegation of Illinois Mayors to the Vatican in an exclusive meeting with His Holiness Pope Leo XIV. The delegation will depart Chicago on March 28th, 2026, returning on April 2, 2026.
The mission, coordinated by the Illinois Municipal League (IML), coalesces a small group of mayors and community leaders for a program focused on international engagement, cultural exchange, and diplomacy.
During the program, participants will visit historic religious and cultural sites throughout Rome, participate in meetings with international and diplomatic leaders and attend events in Vatican City. The delegation also includes a Private Audience with His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, an experience many described as once-in-a-lifetime.
The mission also included discussions with Ambassador Brian Burch, a Chicago native, and the United States Ambassador to the Holy See, providing insight into international diplomacy and global partnerships.
Mayor Chalmers-Currin recently returned from a seven-day mission in Cuba in which she and other government leaders throughout the nation engaged in some of the same focus points. She will be available to address any questions about this remarkable experience as well.
