Thornton Township Offers 1st Empowerment Through Self Defense Class For Women
Chicago, IL. Thornton Township hosted the self-defense seminar to educate women and seniors about self-defense tactics.
One Light Self Defense is a company that trains people to protect themselves against bodily harm. Dr. Jerry Weems, Director of Youth & Family Services for Thornton Township was the coordinator for the seminar.
Dr. Weems added, “Our focus is now on the parent and grandparents as it relates to youth. Caregivers need programming as well as the youth.
For the last 15 years, the focus has been on youth and family. The seminar is beginning to focus on adult caregivers.”
According to Dr. Weems, “Supervisor Frank M. Zuccarelli has supported our desire to work more with young and middle- aged adults of Thornton Township. He truly believes that if it makes sense, financially, and will help our residents.”
Thornton Township Trustee and Human Relation Commission Chairperson Joyce M. Washington said, “This event was excellent. Job well done.”
More than 50 people registered and over 30 people attended. According to Dr. Weems, 100 percent of the money donated to One Light Self Defense goes towards women that have been abused and victims of domestic violence.
The workshops are free, participants have the opportunity to make a donation to help support One Light’s mission of preparing people to avoid,
face, or heal from physical violence.
