2016 Democratic Primary Election 'Key Race' Winners



Tammy Duckworth - U.S. Senator


U.S. Representative Tammy Duckworth glided to victory over Andrea Zopp and Ill. State Sen. Napoleon Harris after receiving 62 percent of votes at press time in Illinois’ 2016 Democratic Primary Election race for U.S. Senator.

Following her career as a helicopter pilot in the U.S. Army, Tammy worked as an advocate for Veterans at both the state and federal level. Tammy was elected to the House of Representatives in 2012, where she has been an active voice for Illinois families. Tammy was living in DeKalb, Illinois, working at Rotary International while pursuing a Ph.D. at Northern Illinois University, when her unit, headquartered in Peoria, was mobilized in 2003 for Operation Iraqi Freedom. On November 12, 2004 Tammy’s UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter was hit by a rocket propelled grenade. She lost both legs and partial use of her right arm in the explosion. As a result of her injuries, Tammy was awarded the Purple Heart. Following her injuries, Tammy became an advocate for Veterans.


Atty. Kim Foxx

Kim Foxx - Cook County State’s Attorney

In an upset, Atty. Kim Foxx was victorious over incumbert Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez and Atty. Donna More after receiving 58 percent of the votes at press time in the race for Cook County State’s Attorney.


Dorothy A. Brown, Clerk of the Circuit Court, Cook County beat out challengers Ald. Michelle Harris (Ward -7th) and Atty. Jacob Meister receiving 47 percent of the vote at press time.

Clerk Brown has brought revolutionary changes to the operations of the Circuit Court Clerk’s Office through her focus on improving services within five strategic areas: 21st Century Technology, Operational Efficiency, Customer Service, Employee Training and Development, and Financial Accountability. Clerk Brown has implemented a host of innovative programs, which have streamlined processes, improved quality service, saved millions of dollars for taxpayers, and increased revenue for Cook County administration.


In a closely watched race, longtime U.S. Congressman Bobby Rush (Dist.-1) retained his seat after battling Ald. Howard B. Brookins, Jr. (Ward 21st) and O. Patrick Brutus for the position. Rush received over 72 percent of the vote at press time.

Bobby L. Rush - U.S. Representative, 1st District

Rush has been a stalwart in African American community for decades. Since landing at the helm of the Illinois’ 1st Congressional District in 1993 he has consistently fought for citizens and bought resources to the area. His most recent advocacy for the 1st District includes obtaining a $4.9 million federal grant for the recently completed Bronzeville Metra Station. During the congressman’s, twenty plus years of service, Rush has obtained millions of dollars in grants for libraries, police departments, hospitals, schools, and art programs. Coupled with his strong community involvement and progressive leadership style, the Chicago Citizen Newspaper proudly endorses Rush for Congress.

Robin Kelly - U.S. Representative, 2nd District


With an effortless win, U.S. Congresswoman Robin will hold on to her seat and continue to serve Illinois’ second congressional district. Her challengers were Marcus Lewis, C.L. Myrickes and Charles Rayburn (not shown).

Kelly began her career representing Illinois’ 38th District in the Illinois House of Representatives from 2002 to 2007. Having served at every level of government, Kelly brings extensive legislative and leadership experience to the 2nd District. She began her government service as community relations director in the Village of Matteson. She was later elected to the Illinois House of Representatives and sponsored bills supporting economic development, increasing the minimum wage and protecting consumers from fraud. She also led the fight for landmark legislation to protect victims of domestic violence and improve public safety.


For more than 16 years, Davis has championed reform in the 7th Congressional District. A strong orator and indomitable leader, Davis has used his immeasurable experience as a public servant including years as 29th Ward Alderman and as a Cook County Commissioner to effectively bring change to his constituents.

Patricia Van Pelt – Ill. State Senator, 5th District


Ill. State Sen. Patricia Van Pelt (Dist.-5th) defeated Atty. Robert Fioretti, who is a former Chicago alderman. She secured 69 percent of the vote at press time.

Van Pelt is a native Chicagoan and community leader and has the tenacity to continue to bring much needed resources to 5th district residents. Among her many professional accomplishments, she is founding director of Target Area Development Corporation, which developed a model that improves public safety in communities through programs that reduce recidivism and change conditions that can lead to violence and crime.

Christian L. Mitchell – Ill. State Representative, 26th District


This hotly contested race yielded winner, Ill. State Rep. Christian L. Mitchell, the incumbent who ran against community activist Jhatayn 'Jay' Travis. Mitchell landed 56 percent of the vote at press time.

Mitchell is a graduate of the University of Chicago and began his career as a community organizer. He’s worked with families to try to help provide a better life for children including tackling the issues of education and healthcare. Mitchell has also worked to help entrepreneurs to eliminate the possibility of shuttering their businesses. The candidate says that it’s the courage of everyday people that inspires him to serve.


Ill. State Rep. Thaddeus Jones (Dist.-29th) will remain in the Illinois House. Securing 65 percent of the vote at press time, Jones warded off challengers Wilbur 'Will' Tillman and Kenneth 'Kenny' Williams.

Jones was sworn in as State Representative of the 29th Representative District in January 2011. His platform includes employment opportunities for families, expanded crime prevention and youth programs, and his staunch advocacy for education continues to unify the district. The representative continues to fight for property tax relief and equality in education funding that does not use the property values of a community to regulate the amount of funding a school receives.


Ill. State Rep. Ken Dunkin (Dist.-5th) has lost his seat in the Illinois General Assembly to Atty. Juliana Stratton. Stratton received 68 percent of the vote at press time.

Juliana Stratton has over 20 years of experience in constructive conflict, collaborative processes, interest-based negotiation and problem solving. She has mediated over 650 disputes and has trained mediators and corporate executives in conflict resolution both locally and nationally. Stratton’s service on governmental and private panels include the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the U.S. Postal Service, United Airlines, the Illinois Department of Children & Family Services, the Center for Conflict Resolution, Cook County Mandatory Arbitration, and the Illinois Department of Human Rights.
