The Black Mall's founder and operator, Cassiopeia Sledge, is coordinating this year's Juneteenth celebration and believes that it should be every bit as important to African Americans as the 4th of July. Juneteenth stands for June 19, 1865 and is recognized as the day that African Americans were officially free throughout the entire United States, two years after Abraham Lincoln delivered his Emancipation Proclamation speech on Jan. 1, 1863.
