A study released last month, by UIC’s Voorhees Center for Neighborhood and Community Improvement, titled, “The Socioeconomic Change of Chicago’s Community Areas (1970-2010),” centers on gentrification and finds that more Chicago neighborhoods are declining than gentrifying as laid out in a press release on the study’s findings. The report notes that from 1970-1980: The Chicago Loop area and Lincoln Park showed significant upgrades, while the Austin community experienced significant decline.

The Illinois Secure Choice Savings Program signed into law by Ill. Gov. Quinn program establishes the option of an individual retirement plan for more than two million Illinois private sector employees who currently do not have access to any retirement plan at work.  According to The Sargent Shriver Center on Poverty Law, Illinois joins  Massachusetts, Connecticut, Minnesota, California, Maryland, and Oregon as states that offer similar retirement assistance programs.

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan applauded the signing of Senate Bill 2809 (SB2809) into law which will allow her office to file a  civil action in order to stop the pension benefits of public employees who have been convicted of a felony related to their employment.  Madigan filed a law suit against former Chicago police commander, Jon Burges, as to whether or not he should receive his pension after becoming a convicted felon in his part in the torture of African American men inpolice custody.  Madigan's law suit was defeated in the Illinois Supreme Court, 4-3, in July 2014.

Ill. State Sen. Kwame Raoul (Dist. – 13) sponsored Senate Bill 2809 (SB2809) which provides the Ill. Attorney General’s office the authority to file a civil action in order to stop the pension benefits of public employees who have been convicted of a felony related to their employment.  SB2809 was drafted in response to former Chicago police commander, Jon Burge, being allowed to receive his pension valued at $54,000 annually  after being convicted for perjury in  admitting to having a role in the torture of over African American men in police custody.
