Local high school student, Darius Sanders, likes to spend time with his friends and family at the Glenwood Roller Rink where he has been skating as far back as he can remember. Unlike most leisurely skaters, Sanders is a three-time National Figure Roller Skating champion and is currently preparing to travel to Paris to compete in the 2018 World Roller Artistic Skating Championships.

The Chicago Child Care Society recently hosted a Creative Writing Workshop with Patricia Frazier, Chicago’s National Youth Poet Laureate. The workshop gave participants of two CCCS young adult programs the opportunity to try their hand at creating poetry and performing spoken word.

The West Side Development Task Force was recently formed by La Shawn Ford, State Representative for Illinois’s 8th House District, to unite the west side communities that he represents, bring attention to the lack of development happening in the area, and to attract new development. Ford called on residents, business owners, and non-profit organizations to attend the first task force meeting where they laid out their goals.

My heart is heavy and in so much pain. A lot of music left earth today. The Heavens rejoice. Aretha, my sister beloved and friend with the 4 octave range and inimitable sound, has gone even higher. She had been battling a debilitating illness over the last few years. She fought as gallantly as she sang, with faith, power and dignity.
At the Black Fire Brigade’s grand opening in June, Lieutenant Quention Curtis, the organization’s president and founder, presented a check to send 10 young adults to EMT school. After his subsequent television and radio segments, the brigade’s phone and inbox were flooded with inquiries from young black adults interested in EMT training – and with donors wanting to help. As a result, the Black Fire Brigade is now providing $30,000 for tuition, books, and uniforms so that 30 students can train for certification.
The City Club of Chicago recently hosted Janice Jackson, CEO of Chicago Public Schools (CPS), to give her outlook on the future of the school district. Jackson became the CEO in January and since then she has been working towards her goal of making CPS the best possible school system for its students.

The Englewood Panthers Dance Team recently performed at the Stop the Violence Ninja Showcase outside of the Daley Center in Downtown Chicago. This was the second performance for the dancers who formed their dance team while attending the Youth of Englewood summer program.
