Mayor Brandon Johnson announced the extension of Chicago Public Schools’ (CPS) Chicago Connected program and the Chicago Park District’s Citywide Broadband and Digital Equity Initiative. Both programs are focused on extending free Internet access to disinvested communities, serving more than 40,000 CPS students and 60 parks across the South and West sides of the city.

An art teacher in Austin created a project for students aimed at beautifying the community. Kayla Lashley is an art teacher at the Moving Everest Charter School. She, along with students from By The Hand Club For Kids in Moving Everest painted trash bins located down Laramie Avenue. The bins feature portraits of local students.
Nedra Sims Fears has been the Executive Director of Greater Chatham Initiative for eight years. Under her leadership, the organization has created the Mahalia Jackson Court, Mahalia’s Mile, Mahalia’s Gift Shop and Artists on the 9ine as ways to increase the Chatham community’s economic development opportunities.
Flora Digby fell in love with boats after attending the Boat Show in 1989. She and her husband bought a boat and put their boat in the Jackson Park Outer Harbor. There, they met members of the Southern Shore Yacht Club. More than 30 years later, Digby is the Commodore of the Southern Shore Yacht Club, where she is the second African American woman to hold the post.
A local creative agency has come up with a way to show the superpowers that dads possess through a short film. Contender recently released the animated short film, “Answering the Call,” for Walmart’s Black and Unlimited Platform. The short film features the League of Black & Unlimited Dads, a group of fathers from different backgrounds who are able to use their superpowers to fix problems and save the day.
Joe E. Gillie has been collecting African and Black art since the 1960s. Growing up in the Black Revolution movement, anytime he saw Black or African art, he purchased it. He always wanted to open a gallery to showcase the art he collected.

Pacific Science Center (PacSci) today announced the appointment of Freeda Warren as Chief Advancement Officer (CAO), a newly-created position. Warren will lead marketing, communications, public relations, government affairs, fundraising, and other activities to build PacSci's capacity for impact. Warren, who previously served as Senior Vice President of Advancement at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, has joined PacSci.
Dr. Carol Bennett, professor of urology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, has received the Jean Fourcroy Leadership Award from the Society of Women in Urology. She was honored earlier this month at the American Urological Association’s 2024 annual meeting.
Mayor Brandon Johnson today announced the reopening of the Gage Park Fieldhouse as well as improvements to Fieldhouse facilities as Chicago Park District staff prepare for the return of summer programming on June 10. The Gage Park Fieldhouse reopening is one of five reopenings that the Park District is hosting at its facilities that were converted into temporary emergency shelters for the New Arrivals Mission.

Although the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into legislation nearly 34 years ago, people with disabilities continue to experience significant employment disparities, including wages that are far below minimum wage. The City is proud to announce that, over a month ahead of schedule, the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities (MOPD) worked with the Office of Labor Standards to phase out the sub-minimum wage for individuals with disabilities working in the city of Chicago.
