Nearly 200 people attended the 40 Tons and Good Green Level Up Career Conference & Business Expo this month at Malcolm X College Conference Center in Chicago. This marked the sixth event for the conference, which grows each year, attracting hundreds interested in connecting with resources and employers. The Level Up Career Conference is an innovative employment resource that promotes social justice and brings together employers who encourage equitable hiring practices with diverse job seekers. The core pillar of the conference was centered around restorative justice, with five key areas of focus: Employment, Expungement, Education, Empowerment, and Engagement.

In Illinois, medical practice “Champions” of the Home Centered Care Institute’s (HCCI) Illinois House Call Project (ILHCP) have spent the past year working to provide care and close the gap on the nearly 200,000 residents in the state requiring, but not yet receiving, home-based primary care (HBPC). CITY OF CHICAGO LAUNCHES CASH ASSISTANCE PROGRAM FOR GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE SURVIVORS
The Chicago Department of Family and Support Services (DFSS) announced the official launch of the Emergency Financial Assistance (EFA) for Gender-based Violence and Human Trafficking (GBV/HT) Survivors, a new $5M fund to provide cash assistance to survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, or human trafficking, with an additional $1M in funding from the 2023 budget. The program will provide one-time, $1000 payments in support of the economic stability of survivors. The application will be open until June 30. Approved applications in this period will receive assistance in the order in which they applied, following the successful processing of the application itself.
MAYOR BRANDON JOHNSON ANNOUNCES CITY OF CHICAGO TO RECEIVE $6.8 MILLION FROM MELLON FOUNDATION TO FUND CREATION OF 8 NEW CHICAGO MONUMENTS
Mayor Brandon Johnson announced that the City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) is set to receive a grant of $6.8 million from the Mellon Foundation to support the Chicago Monuments Project (CMP) and citywide community-generated commemorative initiatives and installations. The funding, the Mellon Foundation’s largest grant to date, will allow for the implementation of eight new Chicago monuments, including the Chicago Torture Justice Memorial, all of which were conceived and developed from the community engagement work of the Chicago Monuments Project.
Leadership Greater Chicago Names New CEO
Leadership Greater Chicago (LGC) has named Myetie Hamilton the next Chief Executive Officer of the region’s premier civic leadership development organization, effective July 24, 2023. The LGC Search Committee, comprised of board members and Fellows, led a rigorous national search in partnership with Koya Partners, a search firm that specializes in placing CEOs in mission-driven roles. Myetie, a proud LGC Fellow since 2016, will step into the CEO position as the first Black American woman to lead the organization.
5 DIVERSE CHICAGO STARTUPS SELECTED FOR GOOGLE FOR STARTUPS BLACK AND LATINO FOUNDERS FUNDS
At a surprise celebration with Googlers, entrepreneurs and Mayor Brandon Johnson, Google announced the Chicago recipients of its annual Google for Startups Black and Latino Founders Funds, which provide promising Black and Latino-led startups non-equity cash awards to help fuel their businesses. The five Chicago-based startups received a total of $750,000 in funding.
