The Samuel DeWitt Proctor Conference, Inc. (SDPC) hosts its 21st Annual Clergy and Lay Leadership Conference, February 19 - 22, 2024, in Chicago, Illinois, at the Palmer House in downtown Chicago. Reverend Dr. Iva Carruthers, General Secretary of SDPC, invites the Chicagoland community to join this continued ‘journey to justice’. According to Dr. Carruthers, “the demands of this season require the best of Black faith leadership to engage beyond civil rights to global human rights”.
Rainbow PUSH Coalition Formally Installed Dr. Frederick D. Haynes, III as President and CEO
On the first day of Black History Month, Dr. Frederick D. Haynes, III was formally installed as the President and CEO of Rainbow PUSH Coalition on Thursday, Feb. 1, at the Black Academy of Arts and Letters. The sold-out installation event featured VIP program participants and attendees from all over the country, including Roland Martin, Rev. Al Sharpton (NAN), Shavonne Arline-Bradley (NCNW), Dr. Michael Sorrell, Dr. Amos Brown, and Dr. Ron Daniels, among others. Tashara Parker, 4X Emmy award-winning journalist, served as the mistress of ceremonies. Both the installation ceremony and the President's Inaugural Social Justice Conference were presented by Sound Design Studios, a Dallas-based Black-owned production company.

For the first time, Asheville's Black heritage and culture is on permanent display around the city through a new walking trail. Unveiled in December 2023, the Asheville Black Cultural Heritage Trail is the first of its kind in Western North Carolina and one of a few Black heritage trails in the 13-state Appalachian region. Chicago Public Schools Posts Proposed 2024-25 and 2025-26 Academic Calendars Proposed Calendar Continues Practice of Starting Classes Before Labor Day
In an effort to support effective planning, Chicago Public Schools (CPS) has posted proposed academic calendars for both School Year 2024-25 and School Year 2025-26. The two draft school year calendars, as well as a related survey of parents and staff, are posted on the District Policies & Rules website page, under “February” as officials prepare to take calendars to the Board of Education for final approval at the February 22nd meeting. Information about the draft calendars and new survey was shared earlier today with staff and families and the final Board-approved calendars will be distributed to CPS families and staff following the Board’s action in February.
ComEd Encourages Residential Customers to Apply for New EV Charger and Installation Rebate
As part of a larger investment to accelerate an equitable adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in northern Illinois, ComEd today launched a new rebate program to increase access to EV chargers. Through the $5 million EV Charger and Installation Rebate Program, ComEd customers can receive rebates of up to $3,750 to offset the cost of purchasing and installing a Level 2 charger in their home in 2024. Level 2 chargers can charge an EV battery 6 to 8 times faster than charging from a wall outlet, often referred to as a Level 1 charger.
After School Matters Applications Open for Chicago Teens to Participate in Free Spring Programming
Applications are now open for hundreds of after-school programs offered this spring through After School Matters®. Program opportunities are available for Chicago teens in the arts, communications, and leadership, sports, and STEM. Spring programs will run from February 26 – May 11.
