Starting off the holiday celebrations was the annual shopping with the Mayor December 11, 2023, at Walmart, 10900 S. Doty Avenue in Chicago. Hip Hop Nutcracker reimagines the classic with a Hip Hop feel

The Hip Hop Nutcracker infuses the story of the classic Nutcracker, with the timeless music of Tchaikovsky, reimagined to take place in New York City with breakdancers, a deejay and a violinist.

Program helps parents of newborns

A Chicago Department of Public Health program provides free, in-home nurse visits to parents with newborns. Family Connects Chicago was launched in 2020 and is available to families in Chicago who deliver babies at eight hospitals throughout the city.

An update on the Woodlawn Central Plan

The Woodlawn Central Master Plan was created as a part of a 2060 Plan by J. Byron Brazier. The plan was approved by the City of Chicago Department of Planning and Development. Brazier took some time to speak with the Citizen Newspaper and give an update on the progress of the plan.

Chicago Public Schools CEO Pedro Martinez has been in the role since September 2021. Martinez said things with CPS are feeling very strong and the school year started off very smoothly. The district ended the last school year very positively. While, the district continues to see significant need, with homeless students or more students with Individualized Education Program (IEP)s, the morale is very strong.

Educator Develops App for School Safety

Shagmond Lowery came up with the idea for the MyPal App four years ago when he was an educator at a South Suburban School District. Incidents at schools in the community prompted him to create the app with the hope it would keep students safe.

Hyde Park Art Center announces programs for Candace Hunter’s largest solo exhibition

Hyde Park Art Center, the renowned non‐profit hub for contemporary art located on Chicago’s vibrant South Side, announces programs for Chicago‐based artist Candace Hunter’s largest solo exhibition to date, including activations for Women’s History Month and Martin Luther King Jr. Day. With reading circles, writing workshops, and concerts, exhibition programming will explore the ideas of speculative fiction author Octavia E Butler (1947‐2006), whose works serve as inspiration to Hunter’s most immersive exhibition to date. In The Alien‐Nations and Sovereign States of Octavia E Butler, Hunter presents a series of assemblage‐based works, installations, video, and sound works that illustrate the meticulously constructed worlds Butler imagined in her novels, examining their significance for Black bodies and future societies. Candace Hunter: The Alien‐Nations and Sovereign States of Octavia E Butler will be on view from November 11, 2023 to March 3, 2024. The exhibition is co‐curated by the Art Center’s Public Programs Manager Ciera Alyse McKissick and Director of Exhibition & Residency Programs Allison Peters Quinn.

New Leaf Illinois continues to assist with cannabis record expungements

New Leaf Illinois has been helping people get assistance in expunging their past cannabis records. The statewide initiative includes 20 nonprofit organizations that provide free legal representation, as well as legal information for people who want to get their cannabis record expunged.
