On August 6, 2025 we paused to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the historic Voting Rights Act of 1965 (VRA), the landmark law that granted and protected long-denied voting rights for Black Americans. Unfortunately, since 2010 over 25 states have enacted restrictive voter suppression laws to create barriers to minority, low-income and young voters. Also, the 2013 U. S. Supreme Court voting rights decision, Shelby v. Holder, further weakened the enforcement powers of the VRA that has left voters vulnerable to more barriers.
TCA Health is announcing the grand opening of its newest clinic in Chicago’s Hegewisch community. The former bank building underwent a total gut rehab that transformed the site into a clinic with five exam rooms, a triage space and pharmacy. TCA Health's newest location at 13336 S. In 2017, Ida's Legacy was formed as the first political action committee to support progressive African American women candidates in Illinois. At our first summer mixer, Legacy & Libations, our featured guests were four women representing various stages of their political journeys. Sharon Fairley, who ran for the first time to be the state's attorney general; Nicole Johnson, who ran for the first time to be 20th Ward alderperson; Donna Miller, who had run for state Senate and was considering her next campaign; and Lauren Underwood, who had beat six opponents in her primary for Congress, all shared their campaign experiences of being under estimated and under funded.

Calumet City - Mayor Thaddeus M. Jones- successfully introduced a balanced $76 million fiscal budget to the Calumet City City Council for passage. The presentation illustrated $26 million in grants as well as the closing of a 3.9-million-dollar deficit due to anticipated cuts and rollbacks from the federal government.
Cook County Commissioners are sounding the alarm about the need for more accessible mental health services in the community for young people. During an event at Larry’s Barber College, Cook County Commissioners Dr. Kisha McCaskill and Tara Stamps highlighted the need to meet young people where they are in places like beauty and barber shops as a way to make mental health services more accessible, and provide safe spaces for them to express themselves through creative outlets.
Ramone Nelson fell in love with musical theatre in high school when he was cast as Jean Valjean in the production of “Les Misérables.” He fell in love with the research of it and the work he had to put into the character.
Troy Pryor has been in the entertainment industry since 2004. Pryor began as an extra on a movie that was filming in Atlanta. Entertainment was really something he was invested in. He was in college at the University of Illinois and playing football.

As a college student, Myles Mackie spent a summer researching the effects free stream turbulence research on low speed airfoils at the DEVCOM Army Research Labs, another helping design a user interface at a NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and yet another working with MIT experts to reduce propeller noise in electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft for applications in urban areas.
Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Black Leadership Arts Collective (B.L.A.C.) proudly present Echoes of Excellence: Celebrating the Legacy of Chicago’s Black Voices, a one-night-only recital honoring the profound contributions of Black artists to Lyric, to the city of Chicago, and to the broader operatic field. YoungArts, the national organization dedicated to the advancement of artists, is now accepting applications for its prestigious annual competition. Artists ages 15-18 or in grades 10–12 are encouraged to apply online at youngarts.org/apply through October 8, 2025. YoungArts award winners receive financial awards ranging from $250 to $10,000 and are eligible for creative and professional development support throughout their careers. Applications are adjudicated through a rigorous blind process by esteemed discipline-specific artist panels. YoungArts 2026 award winners will be announced on November 24.
As education systems across the country seek more effective, research-driven approaches to early childhood development, Laboratory (Lab) schools have emerged as a cornerstone for shaping young learners. City Colleges of Chicago offers child Development Laboratory Schools at five of its campuses, providing children age 2-5 with dynamic, hands-on learning experiences grounded in best practices and the latest research.
