On Saturday, March 23, Congresswoman Robin Kelly (IL-02), joined by Cook County Commissioners Donna Miller and Monica Gordon, presented Respond Now with a ceremonial check for $850,000. Respond Now works to alleviate hunger and prevent homelessness for the most at-risk, serving 12,000 clients annually in Chicago’s South Suburbs. Congresswoman Kelly secured this federal funding through the Community Project Funding process in FY2024 appropriations legislation. The $850,000 will go toward Respond Now’s planned Food Pantry Expansion Project, which is designed to give their clients a supermarket experience.

In a breakthrough for public policy creation, a new data model unveiled by The Clean Slate Initiative (CSI) offers detailed insights into the crisis of arrest and conviction records in America. The data model powers The CSI Data Dashboard, which presents data visualizations and population estimates for people in the U.S. impacted by arrest and conviction records, with data further broken down by race, ethnicity, sex, and type of record within each state and over time. The United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit ruled in favor of Louisiana homeowners Iris Calogero and Margie Randolf. The court reversed a lower court’s ruling that allowed a Louisiana law firm to seek collection of alleged overpayments to homeowners who participated in the Road Home Program. The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), along with attorneys Margaret Woodward, Jenny Deasy and Keren Gesund represent the plaintiffs.
