Cook County Clerk Monica Gordon will join the Chicago Urban League and other community leaders for a timely conversation on protecting voting rights and strengthening civic participation at a community town hall meeting Monday evening.
Hosted as part of the Chicago Urban League’s 2026 Policy Summit, the town hall will focus on the enduring importance of the Voting Rights Act, the power of civic participation, and the responsibility each generation carries to protect and expand democratic rights.
The "Moving Democracy from Theory to Practice" town hall will take place Monday, May 18, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Chicago Urban League Empowerment Center, 8331 S. Stewart Avenue in Chicago.
Among the topics to be discussed:
•
The legacy and continued importance of the Voting Rights Act
•
Why elections matter and how public policy directly impacts everyday life
•
The importance of civic engagement beyond Election Day
•
Immediate and long-term actions individuals can take to strengthen democracy in their communities
Clerk Gordon will be joined by National Urban League President and former Mayor of New Orleans Marc Morial, and Chicago Urban League President and former Mayor of Gary, Indiana, Karen Freeman Wilson.
The conversation will also encourage attendees to think beyond voting alone by exploring ways residents can remain civically engaged year-round through advocacy, community organizing, public service, mentorship, and local involvement.
