Aetna Better Health® of Illinois supports students with no-cost haircuts and school supplies at back-to-school events across the state
Aetna Better Health of Illinois, a CVS Health® company (NYSE: CVS), is helping students return to school confident and prepared by premiering its new Smile & Style mobile barber shop, offering no-cost haircuts and simple braid hairstyles to community members at back-to-school events throughout the state.
By collaborating with community partners, Aetna is also supplying thousands of children in need with backpacks, pencils, pens, folders, notebooks, crayons and color pencils to help prepare them with the tools they need to succeed this school year. By the beginning of September, the health plan will have donated over 15,000 school supplies to children.
"We know confidence and access to basic resources make a big difference in a child's success," said Melanie Fernando, CEO of Aetna Better Health of Illinois. "These Smile & Style events and resource fairs bring essential services directly to families so children can start the school year healthy, supported and ready to learn."
Aetna has hosted and participated in more than 40 back-to-school events across the state including Chicago Defender’s Bud Billiken Parade, Hoops for Health, Alderman Lamont J. Robinson’s 4th Ward Back-to-School Bash, Alderwoman Julia Ramirez’s 12th Ward Back-to-School Block Party and back-to-school events for Illinois State Senator Elgie Sims Jr. and Illinois State Representative Theresa Mah.
In addition to collaborating with neighborhood stakeholders, Aetna hosted community Back-to-School Health & Resource Fairs across the state. During these events, Aetna distributed backpacks, school supplies and connected families to important health and community resources, including Medicaid benefit education, assistance with Medicaid redetermination, and information about preventive care and behavioral health resources.
