Hurricane Preparedness Can Help Save Your  Vacation and Your Backyard Barbeque

IEMA-OHS Recommends Monitoring Hurricanes Despite  Location in Midwest

SPRINGFIELD–Vacation planning to a coastal area can be complicated, and an upcoming hurricane will definitely throw those plans off-course. The Illinois Emergency Management Agency and Office of Homeland Security (IEMA-OHS) recommends that you research vacation sites and reservation cancellation policies carefully.

Hurricane preparedness starts in May, and in some countries where hurricanes are common, extends well past May.

“We may not have hurricanes in the Midwest, but residents often travel to areas that do experience hurricanes,” explained IEMA-OHS Acting Director Theodore (Ted) Berger.

“Fortunately, meteorologists can predict hurricanes days to weeks in advance, and being able to re-schedule a beach visit would be great if your plans will intersect with a

dangerous storm.”

“In addition, we’ve seen heavy rain and flooding in Illinois from the remnants of hurricanes. The trailing parts of Hurricane Helene brought damaging winds, heavy rain, and flooding to sections of Illinois in 2024,” said Berger.

Disaster preparedness information is readily available from IEMA-OHS on the Ready Illinois website, a one-stop resource for detailed information about what to do before, during, and after disasters.
