Jacqueline Carrie Byas Chappell, affectionately known as “Jackie” and to generations of children as “Miss Jackie,” passed away on August 17, 2026, at the age of 86.
A distinguished educator, counselor, librarian, adjunct professor, editor, mother, mentor, and lifelong advocate for education, Jacqueline dedicated approximately 45 years to serving children, families, and communities throughout Chicago. She spent 35 years with Chicago Public Schools before continuing her educational ministry as a librarian with Premier Child Care Centers.
She was the devoted mother of Tamera “Tammy,” Christopher, Marc, and Omoro. Jacqueline will be remembered for her remarkable intellect, unmistakable style, humor, faith, and unwavering commitment to helping every child become their best.
The family shares: “We didn’t lose her. We know exactly where she is.” Her legacy of scholarship, service, faith, family, mentorship, and love will live on for generations
