Black Woman Launches Luxury Furniture Brand

By Tia Carol Jones

Brooke Sharpton started Almond Wind after trying to find a sofa for herself but not being able to find anything that truly reflected her aesthetic. She had just bought a home and wanted to find something that resonated with her, brand wise and design wise.

With Almond Wind, Sharpton set out to design a sofa and build a brand that was more than just beautiful, luxurious, comfortable pieces, but would also resonate with women like herself. When picking pieces to wear, the fashion that Sharpton gravitated toward started with loving the brand first and finding pieces that she loved. She wanted to recreate that same feeling with Almond Wind. Sharpton was previously a Vice President at JP Morgan and said the transition from finance to design required her to exercise a different muscle. She had always been creative, but it was more of something she did as a past time. She said the shift into being a creative full-time has been the biggest adjustment for her.

Sharpton launched the luxury furniture brand in July 2025. The sofas from Almond Wind begin at $1,500 for the Halo two-seater and go up to $5,500 for the Bayshore five-seater l- shape, with the ottomanShe designs and manufactures all of the pieces, she created the sofas from ideas she had in her head and she brought them to life. Sharpton said when she is designing a piece, she thinks about how it would look in her living room, or what a 34- year-old, working professional Black woman would want in their home.

“When you buy the piece, I want all buyers to feel the intentionality behind it, which is that, you come home, you sit down, you’re relaxed, you’re decompressing or maybe you’re laughing or you’re gossiping or whatever you’re doing on your sofa, and I really want it to feel like home,” she said.

Sharpton said with every feather and every piece of fabric, she wants the customer to know that it was created by someone who made it to specifically fit into their space. She wants people who buy Almond Wind furniture to be able to settle into the sofa, feel welcome and feel like it is a safe space. She said her furniture is for professionals who are very intentional about their space and want a beautiful, comfortable sofa.

Sharpton said she really likes Solange Knowles, who she describes as someone who represents being her unapologetically Black and authentic self. She said that Knowles’ relatability is something that she wanted to relay in the name. She said she came up with Almond for the color and Wind as being free and the ability to flow.

In addition to selling Almond Wind direct to consumers, Sharpton is also actively trying to build up the business-to-business side. She said there are quite a few Black Airbnb hosts who own several properties, as well as Black boutique hotel owners who she believes her furniture would be well-suited for.  As the only Black woman owned furniture brand selling sofas in the United States, she feels there is a synergy between Almond Wind and Black people in the hospitality space. Sharpton said the last few months have been a very exciting ride. She said she is enjoying filling the void of being a Black woman owned luxury furniture brand.

Sharpton’s advice for other entrepreneurs who want to create a luxury brand is that the brand and the community are just as important as the quality of the product. She said there has to be a balance, because the entrepreneurs will need the community and its support for the product. She added that the quality of the product has to be great, so that people will tell their friends and family about it.
