TCA Health Responds to Needs of Residents and Employers with Second Informational and Hiring Event
The health center is constructing more than a building
Now that construction season is in full swing, TCA Health is holding its second informational and hiring event for the Nutrition and Wellness Center being built in the Altgeld Gardens/Riverdale area. The nearly 10,000 square foot Nutrition and Wellness Center will be connected to TCA's main health facility at 1029 East 130th Street.
In Jan., TCA Health Employment and Training Program sponsored a similar event that saw more than 100 job seekers attend the three hour event. The informational and hiring event tomorrow is expecting to draw a larger pool of potential workers in response to the growing number of companies, which has nearly tripled.
"We had to move to Olive Harvey College, for a larger location, because of the number of registrations we are receiving," explained Tim Grant, TCA Health Employment and Training Program project manager.
Olive Harvey College is partnering with TCA Health for the informational and hiring event Tuesday, May 20 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at 10001 S. Woodlawn Avenue. As part of its Digital Divide Program, the health center will provide laptops and tablets together with tech support for community residents to complete applications on the spot. Prospective workers should be SNAP and TANF eligible.
From the beginning, it has been a goal of TCA Health to make sure community residents benefit from the Nutrition and Wellness Center, both pre and post construction. Both TCA Health and Milhouse Construction report hiring several area residents respectively from the event and helping them with union requirements, as needed.
So far, the following employers are confirmed: SYSTRA-EXP Joint Venture, Illinois Tollway, Rush Solutions, USPS, DCFS, IDPH, Platinum Pest Control, Comcast, KATES Security, South Suburban PADS, The Chicago Lighthouse and Moraine Valley College. Additional companies are expected.
Once the center is complete, it will help to address the longstanding food desert that was created when the area lost its only full-service grocery store in 2018. The facility will have a Client Choice Food Pantry, teaching kitchen, a grab and go cafe, yoga and meditation space and community meeting areas.
