Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Dedicates Building in Honor of Clerk Spyropoulos

COOK COUNTY -- The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) dedicated the disinfection facility in Skokie in honor of Clerk Spyropoulos. The ultraviolet (UV) water disinfection facility is now named The Mariyana T. Spyropoulos Disinfection Facility at the O’Brien Water Reclamation Plant.

“When I started my career in public service at MWRD I led the charge to disinfect the water at our plants and we finally got it done,” said Clerk Spyropoulos, “As I fought for clean water at MWRD I will continue to fight for the people and to clean government.”

During her time at MWRD Clerk Spyropoulos advocated for many environmental policies, limiting MWRD use of pesticides, encouraged the use of green infrastructure as a stormwater tool to support the tunnel and reservoir plan and launched the Space to Grow green schoolyard projects which is now used in 125 suburbs surrounding the Chicagoland area.

Clerk Spyropoulos initiated efforts to bring transparency by creating an app for residents to report water pollution, she hired an Inspector General and began the process of broadcasting board meetings for the public.

Clerk Spyropoulos was elected to the MWRD Board of Commissioners in 2010 and re-elected in 2016 and 2022. She also served as the Chairperson of Finance from 2013 to 2015 and President of the Board of Commissioners from 2015 to 2019.

MWRD is a special purpose government agency responsible for treating wastewater and managing stormwater in Cook County, Illinois. The UV water disinfection facility for treated wastewater is the largest of its kind in the world, treating over 450 gallons per day. The plant disposes of treated water into the North Shore Channel.

Clerk Spyropoulos is continuing her efforts in public service as Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County and remains focused on transparency, accountability, and accessibility.
