Actress Draws From Life Experiences For Music And Acting Preparation

Rosita Young always knew that she should be on television. She can remember telling her mother when she was four years old that she wanted to be on television. Born in Jackson, Miss., and raised in Los Angeles, Young, who goes by Rosita, was right in the heart of the entertainment industry. Her mother did what she could to help jumpstart her daughter’s acting career.
As Rosita got older, she became interested in playing tennis and in high school, was ranked pretty high among high school tennis players in Los Angeles. While at Ingelwood High School, she got into music, after watching videos of the Grambling State University Tiger Marching Band. Rosita recalls going to the library to research managers and agents. One day, someone who worked at the library gave her a backstage magazine and in it, Rosita found a classified advertisement to be on Nickelodeon.
That advertisement led Rosita to her first on-camera gig working on Teen Nick being on segments in between the television shows.
“My first experience was Nickelodeon, the same studio on Sunset that we used to ride by on the bus, and I had dreams of one day being there. All of a sudden, overnight, I was there,” she said.
While Rosita was known around school as being a tennis player, once she started doing Teen Nick, she started to get recognized for her television appearances. She said having her classmates and the people in her community tell her that they always knew she would be a star, meant so much to her and gave her the push she needed to keep going.
Years later, Rosita has been in “12 Years a Slave,” “Roots,” “Grudge Match,” “Bolden,” and “The Gateway.” She recently starred as Nelly Idowu on the BET + show “American Gangster: Trap Queens.” She heard about the series and thought it was an interesting project. At the time they were filming, the real Idowu was being sentenced for her alleged crimes. Given the fact that the real Idowu hasn’t shown remorse for her alleged crime and Rosita having to put her own spin on the character, she is excited for viewers to watch the finished product when it comes out.
Rosita said she becomes the characters that she plays. She feels as though she has had enough experiences in her life that she is able to pull from. While she has never been a drug addict, she said she is able to pull from an experience where she might have felt like she was down and out or didn’t have anybody to turn to.
She has also put out music. She released “Jody,” which tells the story of a woman who looks outside of her relationship for the love and attention she wants, only to get caught up when one of the guys falls in love with her. With “Fanned Out,” a woman becomes a fan of a performer and their music and goes out of her way to meet the performer and begins to fantasize about a life with him.
Rosita said when she is writing music, she draws from her life experiences, then she puts a comedic spin on it. She likes telling a story in a light-hearted way and telling stories that are relatable. She said everything inspires her. What inspires her the most is being relatable to other people, saying things most people might be afraid to say.
Rosita is doing a project that involves cosplay titled 31 Days of Cosplay for the month of October. She also has another song coming out called “Black Sheep,” about a woman looking for acceptance outside of the norm and finds out she likes the space off the beaten path.
Rosita’s music is available on all streaming platforms.
