Rainbow PUSH Coalition Hosts Annual Back-to-School Block Party with Over 500 Free Backpacks and Vital Resources for South Side Families and Teachers
Chicago, IL — PUSH Excel, an initiative of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, will host its annual Back-to-School Block Party on August 23 at the Rainbow PUSH Headquarters (930 E. 50th St., Chicago, IL 60615). This vibrant community event will offer more than 500 free backpacks, essential school supplies, gift cards to support teachers and access to a wide range of services to help families prepare for the academic year.
Building on the success of last year’s event, this year’s Back-to-School Block Party is expected to draw more than 500 attendees. Families will enjoy an afternoon filled with live performances, food trucks, bounce houses, live music, and over 25 vendors representing local and citywide resources.
“Events like this reflect our commitment to building a future where every child and family has the tools and support they need to succeed,” said Yusef Jackson, Executive Director of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition.
Vendor partners will represent a broad spectrum of community resources, including:
• Workforce development and job training
• Health and wellness services
• Government programs (such as Medicaid enrollment and utility assistance)
• Corporate employers seeking local talent
• Youth-serving nonprofits and programs
In addition to school supply giveaways, the event serves as a one-stop hub for families to access educational, health, and economic opportunities.
This initiative is a key part of Rainbow PUSH Coalition’s mission to protect, defend, and advance civil rights by leveling the economic and educational playing fields for underserved communities.
“There is a competition for the minds of our children—and we must ensure that education stays at the forefront. But it can’t be done alone. It takes all of us—community leaders, faith institutions, and educators—to come together and remind our youth that knowledge is power and equip them with the tools needed to be successful in it,” said Rev. Jesse Jackson, founder of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition.
