Marcus Garvey was born August 17, 1887 and died. June 10th 1940, and is known as the 'Father of Black Nationalism', the originator of the red, black and green flag and the foremost teacher and practitioner of self help and self reliance. Marcus Garvey was the founder of the first and largest mass movement of African Americans in the United States and had divisions of the UNIA in over 40 countries with a membership of 11 million by 1940.
Marcus Garvey has meant so much to many different leaders in our history that in hundred years we saw the building of their organizations with inspiration from him. His achievements in building a chain of grocery stores and restaurants has not been succeeded. His newspaper the 'Negro World' had a circulation larger than any other African American newspaper from the period of 1918-1933, with a Spanish and French section. His Negro Factories Corporation manufactured hats, ties, shirts and uniforms for the members of his UNIA auxiliaries the Black Cross Nurses, the Universal African Motor Corps, the Universal African Legions and the pre-nursing girls classes and the cadet boys classes.
With three million world wide in the year 1920 after several years of success in organizing, Marcus Garvey called for the 'First International Convention of the Negro Peoples of the World', in New York, that opened in Madison Square Gardens with 25,000 delegates from around the world representing the estimated 400,000,000 Africans and people of African Descent. Delegates formed a document called the 'Declaration of Rights of the Negro People of the world that contained complaints against all form anti-Africanism and it demanded the civil rights and the human Rights of the 400 million Africans and People of African Descent. Due to European colonialism on the continent of Africa, that had carved up and parceled out the 12 million square miles of the African continent at the 1884-1885 Berlin Conference. Marcus Garvey's call for independence threatened these Europeans control of Africa and of Black Lives in South and Central America. With the collaboration of a few so-called Negro leaders, the combined powers of Europe, and the J. Edgar Hoovers Bureau of Investigation, later FBI of the United States, a "Garvey Must Go Campaign" was launched. Attempts were made to horas, then to assassinate Marcus Garvey the leader of the UNIA the most social, friendly, charitable, educational and humanitarian society. He came under the earliest form of Hoovers counter intelligence and suffered persecution, frame -up, arrest, indictment, trial by and all white jury, conviction, sentencing and imprisonment.
After 100 years since the 1925 imprisonment and later deportation in 1927 to Jamaica of Marcus Garvey, former United States President Joseph Biden Jr. granted on January 19, 2025 a Posthumous Pardon of Marcus Garvey. President Shaka Barak had been one along with Marcus Garvey's two sons, Marcus Garvey III and the youngest Dr. Julius Winston Garvey and many others who had for years circulated petitions for a Presidential Pardon for Marcus Garvey. There were only two independent African nations on the continent of Africa, when Marcus Garvey was laying the foundation for African independence and today there are 54 nations there.
Shaka Barak is the International Director of a Garveyism Curriculum for the only school on the continent of Africa, named after Marcus Garvey, the Marcus Garvey Drillers Foundation Schools, in Uyo Akwa Ibom State Nigeria. This birthday celebration at New Macedonia will draw attention to this school as it also brings together African Americans from all over the city to show an appreciated of the life of service and sacrifice of Marcus Garvey. Awards will be given to several men and women who over the years have promoted the red, black and green flag, educated youth about Marcus Garvey and that have exhibited leadership in the principles of self- help and self-reliance.
Marcus Garvey gave to the world the UNIA and its motto One God One Aim One Destiny which explains why every religious group and every person of African descent will feel at home at this celebration. The President of local UNIA Division 429, Mr. Clyde Banks will give remarks on how and why the UNIA after 111 years is still alive. Marcus Garvey's essays, poetry, songs and quotes will be presented by New Macedonia members and a Marcus Garvey Exhibit of never seen before photos of him and the UNIA will be set up.
