Roseland Community Hospital Gives Back To The Community
By Tia Carol Jones
As Roseland Community Hospital celebrates its 100th anniversary, the Roseland Community Hospital Foundation continues to engage residents through giveaways and fundraisers.
The Roseland Community Hospital Foundation was established in 2012 with the mission to develop services and hospital programs that would help community residents live healthy lifestyles. The goal of the foundation is to improve health and wellness through charitable resources and philanthropic innovations that enhance the hospital.
The Lown Institute recently gave Roseland Hospital an A grade in community benefits, as well as health equity. During the holiday season, Roseland Community Hospital hosts an annual turkey giveaway. This year, it will take place on Saturday, Nov. 23rd, and is on a first come first served basis. In addition to turkeys, people can also get a hot meal. The hospital also has a toy giveaway where people can sponsor a family to provide toys and gifts for. That way, the children get what they asked for.
Nikia McGee is the Executive Director of the Roseland Community Hospital Foundation and Chief Human Resource Officer for Roseland Community Hospital. McGee oversees the people part of the organizations, with the community in mind. As the Executive Director of the foundation, she’s always looking for ways to raise funds and do things for the community, as well as provide things the hospital needs.
“We’ve always focused our giving back to the Roseland community and the surrounding communities because it is one of those communities that is underserved,” McGee said.
McGee said throughout the year, there is also a back-to-school health fair, a coat drive and a spring health fair. She said the hospital engaging the community with events is a way to distribute resources to community members. That way, they aren’t just getting a turkey or toys or coats, they also are getting valuable information and resources.
“I think that’s the key thing about providing these opportunities for the community, are the resources that we also introduce them to,” McGee said.
Bringing people to the hospital for these events also is a way for community residents to see all the services it provides, which includes the outpatient clinic, medical stabilization unit, behavioral health services, mother and child services, as well as mobile services – dental van, mammography van – and an MRI on site.
McGee said community members are grateful for the events the hospital hosts. They also provide the hospital with feedback on how it can improve their services.
“It’s always a good time, bringing the community together and having the volunteers. It’s a good healing time, having people get resources and spending time together and celebrating the people piece and the community part,” McGee said. She wants everyone to come out and find out about the great things Roseland Community Hospital is doing.
