CHICAGO (April 25, 2024) – President Joseph Biden has appointed Carol Moseley Braun as Chairman and Member of the U.S. African Development Foundation (USADF). Moseley Braun will be sworn in on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, for a term expiring September 22, 2029.

The U.S. African Development Foundation is an independent U. S. government agency established by Congress to invest directly in African grassroots enterprises and social entrepreneurs. USAFD investments increase incomes, revenues, and jobs by promoting self-reliance and market-based solutions to poverty. USADF creates pathways to prosperity for marginalized populations and communities across Africa. This federal agency, authorized by an ADF Act (501 590(h); Title 9 Ch2 Part 1, of the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961;22 USCS-2218; Title V of the International Security and development Cooperation Act 0f 1980-Public Law 96-533 (22 U.S.C.290h) has for decades represented American engagement for development on the African Continent.

“I am honored to serve as chair of the board of the U.S. African Development Foundation and I look forward to beginning to work with the team at the USADF and expanding our role across Africa,” said Ambassador Braun.

Former Ambassador and Senator Carol Moseley Braun was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives in 1978, and elected Cook County Recorder of Deeds in 1988. On November 3, 1992, she became the first Black woman elected to the United States Senate. In 1999, Moseley Braun was confirmed as United States Ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa.

Carol Moseley Braun has been a valued member of the Board of Trustees of The DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center since 2018 and comes to her new role as USADF Chair with longstanding ties to the continent, not the least of which is her own African American heritage.

Currently serving 20 of the 57 African countries, USADF plays a pivotal role in showcasing American involvement in developing Africa and serving her peoples.
