REPRESENTATIVE THADDEUS JONES APPLAUDS THE PROGRESS MADE BY THE ILLINOIS STATE POLICE SINCE THE INSTALLATION OF EXPRESSWAY CAMERAS
HOWEVER, REP. JONES TO CAUTION GENERAL PUBLIC TO NOT GET TOO RELAXED BECAUSE EYEWINESSES ARE STILL NEEDED
WE MUST STILL ABIDE BY THE NOTION, “IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING”
Illinois State Representative-Thaddeus Jones- of the 29th Legislative District- is appealing to the general public to remain observant and cooperative as it relates to the ongoing expressway shooting crisis. Representative Jones is making this appeal amid the great news that the recent installation of expressway cameras has led to several arrests.
Since the installation of cameras within the Chicago area in January, numerous expressway crimes are now being solved by the Illinois State Police Department. However, the Illinois State Police will still need the help of eyewitnesses to apprehend the offenders of these cowardly acts.
I am grateful, honored and blessed for the support in which my legislative colleagues provided me in the significant fight for safety along our expressways. But for my district, the Bishop Ford Expressway has a historical significance. The Bishop Ford has been marred by the numerous shootings that have led to serious injuries and sometimes death of innocent motorists.” says Representative Jones.
Representative Jones adds, “But even with the big assistance of the cameras, eyewitnesses combined with the License Plate Readers will be needed to help eradicate these senseless crimes. We cannot get too relaxed because the cameras have been installed. We need for witnesses to converse with the Illinois State Police which will lead us to the potentiality of eliminating expressway shootings.”
Last year, Representative Jones successfully sponsored and passed through the General Assembly the Tamara Clayton Expressway Camera Act, which required the state to install new cameras on expressways. At that time, the expressway cameras were low-definition and did not record video. The act was named for a postal worker who shot and killed on her way to work on Interstate 57 in 2019. Later in the year Illinois Governor JB Pritzker signed the act into law.
“No one should feel afraid for their life or safety on Illinois expressways,” Pritzker said then in a statement. “Tamara Clayton’s tragic death must not be forgotten, and we must do everything we can to prevent more expressway shootings.”
Representative Jones was the Chief Sponsor of the above-mentioned bill.
Representative Jones adds, “The cameras will not necessarily stop the shootings on expressway but will be used as a tool to catch those people who are using our expressways as their own personal shooting range. I want the criminals who commit these senseless crimes to know that they will be apprehended and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
