CALUMET CITY MAYOR JONES UNVEILS A RESOURCEFUL GUIDE FOR ITS SENIOR COMMUNITY

IN AN EFFORT TO KEEP SENIOR RESIDENTS ENGAGED WITHIN THE COMMUNITY AND RESOURCES DESIGNED TO ASSIST THEM, THE STRATEGIC GUIDE WAS DESIGNED.

Mayor of Calumet City, Illinois- Thaddeus Jones- is announcing a Calumet Senior Community Initiative .

“Imagine a community in which someone can be welcomed and engaged and find accessibility and needed services at all stages of life. This is what the City of Calumet City strives to provide for its residents, as illustrated by a newly created planning document, "Aging-in-Community in Calumet City: A Strategic Guide." says Mayor Jones.

Calumet City is an AARP Certified community in addition to acquiring the Pet-Friendly certification from the Better Cities for Pets program. As part of the Strategic Guide's planning process, residents shared their experiences living in and recommendations for Calumet City, such as an advocacy committee for seniors and a continued focus on economic development.

After the City of Calumet City learned of the Age-Friendly Communities Collaborative of the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, it was immediately recognized that the goal of an age-friendly community describes exactly what Calumet City is working toward.

The City passed a "Resolution Recognizing Calumet City as an Age-Friendly Community: Best Practices" in February 2021. The resolution states, "[T]he City is a friendly community with a rich heritage and strong desire to help others and is desirous of welcoming and supporting its aging population, their families, caregivers, friends with understanding and awareness of the aging process and inclusion within the community.

In March of 2021, the City of Calumet City became the first community in Chicago's south suburbs to be part of AARP's Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities. With help from the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus and the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, working with a grant from the Retirement Research Foundation for Aging, Calumet City participated in the first cohort of the "Aging in a Changing Region.

The aging-in-community plan is available online at https://mayorscaucus.org/initiatives/aging-in-community/aging-in-a-changing-region/, where plans for Calumet City as well as other communities are collected. Please visit the websites of ComEd, Catholic Charities, and Thornton Township to learn more about what they provide for seniors.
