STATE REPRESENTATIVE THADDEUS JONES SUCCESSFULLY PASSES HB-0378 OUT OF THE ILLINOIS HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
BILL REQUIRES A MANDATE FOR BLACK OWN MEDIA HEADS TO SENATE
AFTER YEARS OF WITNESSING THE STATE SPEND MILLIONS IN ADVERTISING DOLLLARS THAT BYPASSED BLACK OWNED MEDIA COMPANIES, REP JONES STANDS UP FOR BLACK MEDIA
HB0378 102ND GENERAL ASSEMBLY (ilga.gov)
Thaddeus Jones-Illinois State Representative of the 29th District- is expressing his heartfelt thanks to his Illinois House Colleagues for their support of him in the passage of HB 0378. HB 0378 would mandate that no less than 10% of all advertising dollars spent by the state of Illinois would be spent with Black Media owned companies.
“This marks a very historic moment for Black owned media companies. The state has spent hundreds of millions of dollars in advertising, but less than 1 percent of those funds were spent with Black owned media. This is unacceptable and a slap in the face to Black owned media companies and publications.” says Representative Jones.
After much research, Jones discovered that many Black owned media companies had closed their doors due in part to a lack of support from state and local governments. In fact, the number of Black owned media companies have declined by more than 40% over the past ten years.
State Representative Debbie Meyers-Martin adds, “I was more than happy to support this bill that clearly has an impact on so many communities throughout Cook County and beyond. This measure will surely allow Black owned newspapers to continue reporting the positive news in our neighborhoods that truly reflect our culture.”
The bill now heads to the Illinois State Senate where the members of the Black Caucus are expected to advocate strongly for its passage. Illinois State Senator Napoleon Harris will be the lead sponsor of the bill.
