Citizen Newspaper: Why are you seeking re-election for the 7th Congressional District?
Davis: I am seeking re-election to continue working on the issues and problems I have been working with since my early adult days as an educator, community organizer, health worker, youth worker, and economic development specialist. I am a senior member of Congress, serving on the influential Ways and Means Committee serving as a Ways and Means Sub-Committee Chairman; therefore, I am well-positioned to influence decisions. I have institutional knowledge and know-how to get things done. I am a leader in my community, I have the respect of the people, know many of them, and many of them know me.
Citizen Newspaper: What is some key legislation you have passed while you have been in office?
Davis: I have run community organizations and groups. I have been successful and have made a difference. I have served as an Alderman, a member of the County Board, and a member of Congress. I am seriously proud of every bill that I have been able to get passed; however, the legislation I am most known for is the Second Chance Act, which has generated more than 1 billion dollars in grants to governmental agencies and private non-profits. I am seriously proud of the Garrett Lee Smith Memorial Act, which provided money for Mental Health counseling services in colleges and universities; my mentor Proteges Program has helped many small businesses. I was one of three original sponsors of the American Community Renewal Act and New Markets Tax Credits.
Citizen Newspaper: How have you engaged your constituents during your time in office?
Davis: I have introduced and co-sponsored hundreds of bills; but 43 of my bills have been passed, and I am proud of each one of them. I have held hundreds of town hall meetings, have ongoing task forces, and host cable T.V shows and radio calls to a full engagement of public interactions. There are many important issues in my district, Education, Healthcare, Jobs Creation, Poverty Reduction, and the Creation of Affordable Housing. I have brought Billions of dollars to my district. Transparency is the only way that constituents can trust an elected official. My management style has been that of an open book. I have studied and experienced the process; I know the processes.
