MAYOR THADDEUS JONES DECLARES A LOCAL STATE OF

EMERGENCY FOR CALUMET CITY

DECLARATION COMES AFTER DEVASTATING FIRE TO LOCAL COMMUNITY LEAVING NEARLY TWO HUNDRED RESIDENTS WITHOUT HOUSING AND ESSENTIAL ITEMS

“IN THE INTEREST OF WELFARE AND PUBLIC SAFETY CAUSED

BY AN EMERGENCY”

(Calumet City, Ill) Thaddeus Jones-Mayor of Calumet City, Illinois- with the unanimous approval and support of the Calumet City Council has declared the city of Calumet City, Illinois as a local state of Emergency.

On Monday nearly two hundred residents were displaced following a fire at the 312-unit Park Condominium Complex in Calumet city that left an 85-year-old woman deceased and seven other people injured, including three firefighters.

Upon the first dispatch call announcing the fire, Mayor Jones immediately pulled together his administrative team and several Alderman on the site of the fire and created safeguards for residents including engaging the American Red Cross, contacting area businesses who supplied food, contacting area hotels to create additional temporary housing, and ensuring that the residents had means of communication to contact relatives.

From the efforts of the mayor’s administrative team and Calumet City Aldermen, residents were placed in numerous hotels within the region and received resources via the mayor’s communication to other regional, local, and county agencies who immediately provided relief to the residents.

On yesterday, the mayor called an emergency meeting of the Calumet City Council. It was there where the Alderman unanimously approved and announced their full support for the mayor to declare a state of Emergency for Calumet City given the devastation from the fire. The Aldermen also approved emergency funding for the mayor to use to ensure that residents could remain in the hotels in which the administrative team deemed credible and safe.

Some residents took upon themselves on the night of the fire to find lodging in areas in which the mayor is not comfortable with in terms of their safety. The mayor’s team has located those particular residents and have begun transitioning them into hotels that offer a safer and friendlier environment.

The local state of emergency will now allow the mayor to access resources throughout other government agencies that can provide the nearly 200 residents short term and long-term assistance as they attempt to recover their losses.

The Mayor and City Council is most grateful to Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and the government of Cook County for responding so swiftly to the clarion call of Calumet City. The mayor is equally as grateful to the American Red cross, local business of Calumet City who continue to provide food, water, and essential items to the residents.

But moreover, the Mayor and City council are incredibly grateful to the Calumet City Police and Fire departments who saved the lives of so many residents during the fire. Calumet City was also supported by over 24 other fire departments ranging from Chicago to Frankfort, Illinois.
