CSSFF Highlights Exceptional South Side Filmmakers with a Variety and Quality Screenings

Chicago, IL. – September 2nd, 2019 – Chicago South Side Film Festival (CSSFF) holds its first virtual celebration of the South Side of Chicago on films. The diverse films will virtually bring together film-goers and film-makers September 27th to October 4th

Opening the virtual festival on Friday, September 25th is the screening of No Lye-An American Beauty Story, directed by record executive, music journalist and documentary filmmaker Bayer Mack. The Essations hair care company sponsored documentary chronicles the rise and decline of the black-owned ethnic beauty industry in America. On Satuday September 26th is Unlearning Sex feature documentary film that follows director Zanah Thirus six month journey through sexual trauma therapy and healing, followed by Shorts Block 1 and a panel discussion. On Sunday September 27, director Larrisa Lam takes us on a journey with Far East Deep South, sponsored by A Space For Creators. The emotional journey documentary follows Charles Chiu, a Chinese-American man from California, who travels to Mississippi to visit the grave of his father who abandoned him 75 years ago, he and his family stumble upon surprising revelations that change their lives.

"What distinguished us from other film festivals in previous years and this year is our firm commitment to the South Side of Chicago,” said CSSFF founder and executive of, Michelle Kennedy. “All films screened this year are made by South Side filmmakers, or have at their center issues and ideas important to the South Side."

The festival will continue on Thursday, October 1st with 40th: The Story of Bishop William Roberts and Roberts Temple directed by the legendary DJ Lori Branch. Saturday, October 3rd will be Short Blocks 2, screenings of multiple short films by diverse directors, followed by a panel discussion.

The Chicago South Side Film Festival is a not-for-profit arts organization founded by South Side native Michelle Kennedy. The two-fold mission of the CSSFF is to broaden, diversify and improve the quality of entertainment options on Chicago's South Side, and to provide South Side filmmakers with opportunities to screen their work.
