Movie Maker Mondays Teach Fundamentals Of Screenwriting And Filmmaking

Contexture Media Network is currently in the midst of hosting their first session of Movie Maker Mondays, a six-week workshop series that provides useful information about film production. The workshops are being held every Monday from 7 p.m.-9 p.m. at the Movie Studio Grill, 210 W. 87th St., in Chatham and the cost is $60 per session.
Since its creation in 2015, Contexture Media Network has been working to create equity in the digital content and media industry through specialized programs, workforce training, and community initiatives, according to a press release announcing Movie Maker Mondays.
“We are a digital media company first and for most and in short we offer things like training cohorts and web development services and training,” said Eunice Smith, director of operations for Contexture Media Network. “We look at how to give people a path to careers, or even entrepreneurship if that’s what they desire.”
Movie Maker Mondays are part of Contexture Media Network’s Script to Silverscreen Initiative which is a new approach to screenplay developing that puts the writer in control of creating their own direct pathway to movie production.
“The Script to Silverscreen Initiative is a partnership between Contexture Media Network and the Word Smith Writers Lab. What we are doing is collaborating to figure out how we can bring more script development lessons to those people who don’t have the opportunity to go to film school,” said Smith.
The workshops that are being hosted on Monday nights at the Studio Movie Grill in Chatham are just another extension of the Script to Silverscreen initiative and a way to expose even more people to a variety of concepts that will help them with screenwriting and filmmaking.
“In the first session, we talked about how to come up with a concept, write the title and the logline, and then how to write a synopsis so that they could focus on what their central idea was and get an idea of where they wanted to take their story. The second session we focused on characters, what major characters were, what minor characters were, and the major character archetypes and how they play a role in script development,” said Smith.
The goal of the Script to Silverscreen Initiative and Movie Maker Mondays is to help more people produce complete screens plays and lead them on a path to production which is something that didn’t previously exist on the south side of Chicago, according to Smith.
“We are really excited to bring this type of program to the south side of Chicago because typically this is something you would find downtown or on the north side or the western suburbs but on the south side and in the south suburbs we didn’t see any of this kind of development happening,” said Smith.
